drive types question
Generally 4WD refers to vehicles with a high/low transfer case, usually off-road trucks. AWD usually refers to road vehicles that send power to all four wheels but do not have a high/low transfer case. (e.g. Quattro, Subaru, 4Matic, etc.)
But for most purposes the terms are used interchangeably.
2WD is sometimes used to refer to the two wheel mode used by 4WD vehicles that can be switched to. Whereas a RWD is purely RWD all the time or FWD, FWD all the time.

AWD is sometimes considered the variable ratio systems... like Quattro, 4 Motion, Attessa, 4-Matic, etc... that can transfer varying amounts of torque between the 2 axles as needed.
4WD is usually a fixed amount of power transfer like on a pickup truck.
