Maybe your manual is different, I got an EX and it says 5w20s. It first took me a while to find a synthetic 5w20s too for my first oil change. Some ppl say its not good to use synthetic in the beginning, but oh well. for K&n filter, get HP-1010 (works for all models even Si). Ok, back to engine oils, if you don't live in a cold place and you don't think you won't have trouble starting the car during cold weather, then you can go with 10W instead of the recommanded 5W, the oil itself works the same once its warmed up, but 5W will get your car start in lower temperature. And also by using higher high viscosity oils are not always necessarily better since in addition to its' various engine lubrication functions, an oil must also effectively transfer heat. Only about 60% of an engines cooling is performed by the engine coolant, and only on the upper half of the engine. The remaining 40% of an engines cooling is performed mainly by the engine oil. But you can still use the 40 weight oil in our car, but you will not gain anything in performance and they are usually for highly modified cars (modified Ford Cobra Race cars, not the typical I/H/E civics
) or your car's engine is excessive worn out.
So the answer you are looking for is YES, but I think you should know a couple of facts understanding why the answer is yes.
hope this helps

10W40 is a heavier weight oil and definitely not necessary for an engine with less than 100,000 miles. Sometimes we get a customer that complains about oil leaks and we'll use 10W30 Maxlife (Valvoline) and it often helps with minor oil leaks. Using such a heavy oil early on isn't going to kill your engine, but I wouldn't recommend it. If you want your engine to last a long time, use 5W20 or 5W30 semi-synthetic (or full synthetic if you have cash...) and continue changing your oil every 3,000 miles. A lot of people believe synthetic oils only require changing every 5,000+ miles, but the additives in synthetic oils are used up at the same rate as the additives in your basic oil. Also, using synthetic in the beginning will not hurt your engine. There are several cars that come straight from the factory with synthetic oil nowadays.
you'll probably see accelerated engine wear in the d-17, especially when it's cold outside, with 10w40. 10w40 will not flow as quickly as 5w20 when cold thereby it will take longer for the upper engine parts to recieve lubrication....
