Yup, it definitely won't be as easy as Boilermaker said it would. That's why I said I would pay good money for this DIY if somebody can come up with all the instructions and wiring mods.

edit: i just checked in my service manual..it seems there are two relays for the moonroof located somewhere above the headliner...one for opening it...one for closing it...it would be possible to press the switch for one or the other and add a capacitor and resistor to one side of the corresponding relay's coil to hold it open for a few seconds...the length of time would be dependent on what capacitance/resistance you go with...i'm not 100 percent..but i think this'll work..check with the guys at the http://www.the12volt.com

If it is a large value. then I guess you'de have to change the way the relay works. Instead of only closing the circuit when the button is depressed it would have to close the circuit for as long as the moonroof needs to open or close. Wait! That's it. Again, two capacitors are needed. One for closing and one for opening. Although this time all the charge they need to hold it the charge it takes to hold open the relay so that the circuit is closed. That's it! It should be easy enough to hook up.
I don't have a moonroof, so I can't experiment. Someone should try this though. They'll need to calculate how much current it takes to hold the relay open, or just experiment maybe??? Are there such things as variable capacitors? That would be nice. Then you could dial in the value you needed and use a multimeter to check how much longer the circuit is closed after the moonroof is open or closed. Yep. That's it. Anyone?

its funny how people without a moonroof are all over this idea
anyways...this relay diagram is what i'm talking about...converting a pulsed to steady output...

Wow! I just thought about that in the car on the way home. I'm not sure, but i think the Lexus IS300 has this feature. I hope someone tries out what Grey said! Thanx MR. DIY King. What if we wanted two auto window down buttons. Has anyone thought about that one yet? Useless pondering.. By the way, whats wrong with the switch for the blinkers?

Sorry to shoot you guys down. But I am going to school to be a electronics engineer and work in a shop as a electric tech. I did some talking with my boss and my teacher. The only real way to do this is to get a new relay (gate). Thats the braint that determines all the work. Using capicitors is only a temporary thing. Since they discharge they wouldnt stay high enough long enough for the thing to work. You would be smoking components with the proper current need to run the system. So if you wanted to go find a new logic gate and find out how to wire it. I would go that direction. Sounds like to much work for six seconds here or there.

you'll still need to incorporate a switch to toggle back and forth for opening and closing...unless of course the polarities would switch since the window will go in a different direction...aughh...too much things that you want and not enough information for this...questions like
1)is the voltage for both motors (assuming there's two) the same polarities?

Just go buy a DEI window automation kit (part #530t) and hook up half of it (only one "window"). automation gives you one touch up and down, so why not open and close your sunroof with it.

i wrote a really long post about this, then hit the wrong button. i am very saddened.
the jist of what i said was that the timer relay will work. but you end up damaging the motor long term as you continue to feed current to it for the fraction of a second it remains on even tho the roof is open all teh way.
designing a circuit isnt too bad, exept you have to be able to sense the loading of the motor, as it changes whether its in motion or stopped. too difficult to justify.
the power window kits RETAIL for $60 one way. so thats the better deal, in the end.
$60 plus tax, and wire it up to yrou existing switch, and whenever you pulse it, itll open fully.
this is liek teh third time ive lost a post, im rather dissapointed with the new forum layout....

Yea, auto down is cool. but auto-up is the one of the coolest things on my car. Everytime i show someone that it really does work, i get that "O" face lookin back at how my windoes are rolling themselves up with my hands off the switch. Also have that cool auto-roll down feature where i hold teh unlock button on my remote and the windows will roll down as long as i hold it down. (not to mention the cool door lock / window roll down key thing that VW made famous in those goofy commercials...)
