My 2k1 civic was totalled so i had to buy another car cash.
It's a 93 civic hatch dx. I'm going to do an engine swap, but I
have no luck in my homework for finding the right engine. For
every comment, there's someone else who contradicts it.
The H22 is heavy but provides good torque. I also heard that
the hatch is so lightweight that this engine would provide the
car with horrible understeering, not to mention the hatch would
need more front end reinforcement-- but even at that, is it worth it?
The B18C1 (GSR) is my next choice. I would be able to do the head
and pistons from a type-R (b18c5), a skunk-2 manifold, and civic
type-R cams. But I'm not sure if this will provide me with more power.
The B20 block with a type-R head is used for greater compression,
but also knowing this block weighs alot I'm not sure if this swap would
be beneficial.
This will not be my daily car for long, which also leads me wanting to
turbo it. The H22 will hold the boost better than the B20 choice, but
what about the B18?
I wanted to try to do all-motor first, but will that be too expensive?
Please help guys, thanx

I don't think this is the right forum, but anyways....
I don't think I'd drop an H22 into a hatch unless all you were going to do was drag race. Like you said, it will understeer like hell. If you do intend to turbocharge it, then your best bet is a B18B from an Integra LS. Despite the fact that it still is listed as 1.8L like the GSR and ITR motors, it actually has 37 more cc of displacement. In addition to that, the compression is lower, and there is no VTEC. VTEC complicates turbo engine management because you have to set 2 of everything, one for VTEC and one for low RPM. The B18B is also regarded as being pretty "Bulletproof" as far as turbocharging goes (I'm not saying you can't turbo a VTEC engine, it's just more complicated). I've seen videos of hatches with 300+ HP turbo B18Bs laying down 12 sec 1/4
s. If you want the car as a whole package (daily drive, Drag racing and road racing), then you'll be better off with a B18C1 or B18C5 and building it all motor. Obviously the Type R motor is going to be harder to find whole, but practically all the B-series parts are going to be interchangeable. That'll give you the every day drivability since you won't have the turbo lag, you'll be able to take the windy roads home with whatever the hell the redline ends up being after the engine is built up and you can pretty much take it to any kind of track you want. I don't think all motor will be more expensive, to turbocharge it and make lots of boost, you'd have to do all the same things you would to go all motor, except with the emphasis on setting up the engine for the turbo rather than just pulling as much from the engine itself.... and then you would have to buy the turbo.

what boilermaker said. h22 is a good engine but in a hatch you will only want to race it, otherwise it would be a horrible day to day car. but if you do want to race it, keep in mind althought the block is bigger it costs a bit more for the parts and there aren't quite as many as there are for the b series. so you could get more power if you have all the money you want to put into the car, but otherwise you will most likely get more out of a b series engine and could double it up as a good everyday car.

yea b18c1 should send you flying with just a little bit of modding...
