DIY: blue center dash lights

well, not a very detailed DIY but i just wanted to show pics.

You can do any color you want... red/yellow/blue/teal/green

Find the colored condoms at partsexpress.com (search for: .12" lamp cover)
or you can click here
10pk = enough to do the center dash... You can also buy more and do your speedometer and other stuff.
Do not get the .2" ... too big.

DIY here.... 38 pics

I used 2 blue condoms per bulb, but still got the "teal" look. I think RED condoms would work best... oh well.

If any of you buy red, feel free to send me some please!

-ak

edit: If you want to try the blue paper way, go to Ralphs and buy like a 24 pack of Aqua Fina water bottles. Cut out the blue parts (1"by1") and have fun.
Cost: $4.99 + tax (even more ghetto)

Kudos on the DIY. I'm having this done in spring cause I'm too chicken to pry my centre console out.

Do you have any final product pics with everything back together and the lights on? That would be nice to see. Thanks

Does anyone know where you can get a different light condom that made the light blue instead of teal?

AK - when you had the bulbs out did they look like some bulbs that could be replaced with some from radioshack. I know on the other diys they talked about it but your DIY is the only one that had good pics.

BTW nice job

Thanks for the DIY. Definitely going to use this in the spring when it warms up. Too bad it's teal. Would rather it come out a darker blue.

born2xLr8, takes about 15-20 minutes to take the dash apart. Everything together, a little less than an hour... time flies by as you do it!

Deceit, not at all. I just took a lot of pics

blazed870, yes i've actually tried that in the past. You need to know how to solder resistors, hence have electrical skills. I blew the LED trying to do it...scary.
The bulbs are not plug and play, you need to modify them a bit. LED would be the best though...bright, but expensive ($3/led)

outdrsmn80, I think if you buy some sort of REALLY dark shade of blue it would work great. No idea where you could find them though

That's cool AK, I remember I emailed you before and you said that you were gonna work on it again. Didn't know it was so soon. Anywayz, I did mine by using roscolux sheets. I took out the orange things and traced it with the blue sheet. Two layers for each dial. I guess it came out good although the two layers combined make it appear purplish a little bit. Also it is a little dimmer than I expected. But it goes with my cd player so all good. Just wondering, have you found ways to do the mirror and cruise controls and the gears by the shift ****?

twizzx, not the mirror or cruise control part... they look kind of hard.

The gears..yes, just take off the center piece and you will see the same orange tabs.

Follow this DIY to remove the center piece

It's brighter than what it looks like on the pics. My camera lenses suck at night.

Good DIY. I just did mine the other day and I used some cheap *** blue folders I got from the drug store and just cut them to fit where the
orange tabs fit and i got a blue similar to this and it is bright. I tried this method for the mirror, cruise switches but no luck you need condoms for those.

hey AK I think you should change your link for the light bulbs because for some reason it still has your information on it. When I tried to check out it had your info or someone's personal information on it! You should log out first and do a link!

Ak

To install leds, all you have to know is how to soder, or is there more to it than that? I really want mine to be blue and bright.

well yea, but you also got to put resistor.

The hardest part is working out the math...finding the correct LED w/ a good resistor.

By working out the math do you mean finding the right wattage? Sorry for all the questions, I just dont have any electrical background and I really want to put in leds. Do you know of a site that has information on this. Also if I did do the LEDs wrong is the harm I could do is that I would have to replace the LED or could I harm the cluster its on too?

Right.... the right flow and all.

thread 1

thread 2

PM the people on those threads who have successfully done it. I have yet to succeed...

I'm guessing if you burn the LED, only the LED would be damaged.
Like i said above, when i was trying the LED i burned it and no other damage occured.

Goood luck!!!
