Making a custom intake mainfold...questions

After reading STLvetecs post about his customized focus intake manifold I started thinking and heres what I came up w/. Im Working on my mechanical engineering major in college so Iv had plenty of CAD and machining classes, and still have access to a CNC machine shop. So If I were to remove my intake manifold and make and measure the size and location of the ports and mounting studs on the head (Id bet money the ports on the head are bigger then the ports on stock intake manifold) I could make a CAD drawing of what the ideal flange would look like. Then I can either make this into a bolt-on adaptor to use w/ the manifold I buy or I can hack off the flange on the new manifold and grind it smooth , and then have my new flange welded on. I figure If im going to go that far why not just buy a larger TB while Im at it? So any other Ideas that could help?

u can do all that...or wait... I talked to a rep at Venom yesterday and he told me an intake manifold was in the future for our cars.

Thats cool, although venom manifolds are like $700-$800.

Looks like you want to get more air and fuel into the engine, so of course the bigger TB is in order. I think you'll also need a mod or add on for the ECU in order to take advantage of these. My opinion, based on working with older bigger engines, a hotter ignition, with more advance, a more agressive cam, and of course high flow exhaust, should get you some good power gains. I think that basically if you can get more air and fuel, burn it in a more agressive, efficient manner, and build more RPM, you will naturally build more power.

Of course, for everything you do, there's always going to be a weak spot, so each of the combined mods may call for more mods like higher compression, stronger internals, bigger valves, and on and on. It all depends on just how far you want to go.

As it is, if you can come up with a good, economical way to mod or make a better intake, that's a hell of a good start.

Dude, don't bust on mods. That's not k3wl. We're here to help. I don't know where this thread was at first, but how about I move it to Tech Stuff...

Anyway, if you're serious about this then read the book "Maximum Boost" by Corky Bell. He talks about intake manifolds in there and he's got many good ideas.

I would make a manifold that keeps the placement of the throttle body the same. That way aftermarket intakes bolt right up without any modification. I would also make a plenum and I would make the runners from the plenum to the intake ports decrease in diameter the closer they get to the ports. That increases the air velocity near the injectors for better atomization. There's more to consider. I would read up on intake manifolds if I were you.

It's not that easy. If you are a mechanical engineer I can only assume that you are in your first year or two. there is more to an intake manifold then just that. There is a lot of aero-dynamics involved in a new intake manifold. Thats why it takes time to come out with parts like that otherwise every parts place would have them. You could make a new manifold in your garage but if you want to do it right you have to take into account fluid-dynamics and dyno test things. That takes time. If you just hack stuff up and plaster it back on you may or may not get more hp. I'd wait for a designer at a shop to finish with one that has been tested, let them do all the hard work. Unless of course you have lots of spare time to all the engineering software, full machine shop and a dyno at your dispense.

Some of the greatest speed equipment in the world was originally built by hot rodders with nothing but an idea, some experience and trial and error to go on.

I would get the intake flange made up first. to ensure proper sealing and bolt pattern.

then decide on runner length and if your going to build a box style plenum.

then make sure to fab up all the Tb brackets, lines etc.
