Downpipe Question
Downpipe Question
I have one other realted post but...
I dont think the cat is the same as the resonator but i'm not sure, but dont worry about that in this post
ANYWAYS
I have a thermal R&D catback(wanting to trade for a Tanabe Super Racing) but how would it sound if i went to an exhaust guy and had him just give me a straight through pipe? I also have a CAI and DC header. I was going to buy the HP racing but i figured having the DC and just doing this would give me about the same gains.
The guy i go to did this for me on my camaro and it sounds bad as hell now but what would you think about this on an 02 Vic?
Would i get pretty much the same gains/sound if he just "reamed out" the cat?
Thanks

Well, for one the cat and resonator is not the same....the resonator is like a pre-muffler and helps to deaden the sound. If you hollow out the cat or throw a pipe in there....for one, you will have a check engine like on and two, you will loose a bunch of low end and your car, imo will sound like garbage. I my 80 Camaro V6, taking off the cat and adding a dual exhaust made it sound a lot nicer bu on our cars it will not.

Bobbyd is right. The resonator just muffles sound like the Air Intake resonator. You take it off it will be louder. You take the cat off on most 4 cyl cars it will sound like crapy. You can get a high flow cat which is made to be a straight pipe but helps the sound. YOur check engine light will be on unless you can bypass the O2 sensor (which has been done so do a search). You will not pass emissions if you have them in your state. And like bobbyD said you will lose backpressure meaning you will lose torque
