Ok lets start from the front.
the exhaust manifold (AKA header) exits the engine.
The downpipe attaches to that.
The cat comes next.
Then there is a mid pipe, resonator then muffler.
An axle back just replaces the pipe from the rear axle back keeping the stock resonator in tact.
A cat back replaces the midpipe and the muffler (along with the resonator usually unless it has one built in)
now there are a few ways to change the exhaust set up. There are shortie headers which is just the top portion (like the DC sports). There are full headers (ie the exhaust manifold and downpipe). There are also high flow or free flow cats which are just hollowed out cats. You can't pass emissions with them but they give some HP. And then the rest of the exhaust. Stock set up for exhaust piping is a little less than 2 inches. Upgrading the piping to 2.25 or 2.5 inches is plenty. Anything bigger will not allow much back pressure which our cars need to generate torque. The HP exhaust system is the most complete for our cars. Mowhawkboom did a thread explaining how to make your car breath better and upgrading the exhaust will help.

OK so i have a thermal R&D catback. So that replaces the resonator , or eliminates it??? I have a DC 4-1 Header also and i wanted to do a straight through downpipe, or would i be better off buying a highflow downpipe/cat from someone off here(i'm interested) but if it's already replaced by the thermal then i dont konw what else to do? I like my Thermal Very low sounding, but i want a little louder

if your area restricts it, replacing with a downpipe + high flow cat will be better... but most states have regulation against swaping in a new cat when ur old one isn't even screwed up.
my suggestion is the random technology bolt in downpipe + high flow cat... remember, the stock downpipe is welded to the cat convertor.
if u want a lil louder.. a straight pipe may make it a bit louder.. and will get u more gains too.. but its also illegal, and u gotta get a o2 simulator for the o2 sensor behind the cat convertor.
