DIY: JDM B16A/B18C5 Style Valve Cover Paint Job

I know the 01+ SOHC D17s dont have the most visible Valve Covers, but if you like the look of the RED...or any color for that matter....WRINKLED PAINT JOB on their valve covers, heres how you can do it yourself...
I picked up this DIY off of www.honda-tech.com. i hope they dont get mad at me for reposting it here... heres thel link just in case you wanted to check out the picture of the valve cover too...
http://www.honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=358294

"as requested..i have a d16y7, should be pretty much universal with any D B or H head.
1. Order VHT Wrinkle Plus paint avalible in black or red get it here: http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=7841

2. Once the paint arrives, take off the valve cover by removing the plug wires, breather line, wire bracket in the lower left corner and the PCV line bracket at the top as well as the 5 bolts. Use a rubber mallet or a hammer and a towel and tap the cover on all sides, it should then lift right up.

3. Carefully remove the gasket and set it on the head, put the plug wires back in the holes and close the hood to keep debris from getting into your oil.

4. Use some degreaser to get most of the oil out of the inside, and scrub all the grime off the top. If you cover is already painted, get some aircraft paint stripper from walmart. I didn't have to do this, so you're on your own there.

5.(optional)Go through the process of a mild polish, concentrating on the letters. Start with 40 grit sandpaper and get as much area as you can, its tough to get between the letters and in the corners, but if you're using wrinkle paint it really doesnt matter much. Move up to 100 grit and take your time. Go through as many steps of grit all the way up as high as you can find, meaning if you buy a variety pack go through all of them in numerical order.

6. Rinse off the valve cover with a garden hose to get the dust off from polishing.

7. Use some 2" masking tape to tape off the breather hole, oil cap, and spark plug holes. Use a razor to trim the tape. Again, take your time here. Get some q-tips and vaseline and oh so carefully apply it to the top of the HONDA letters and anywhere else you want to not paint. The thicker the better. Use an exacto knife and scrape the vaseline from the side of the letters, this makes it look alot better and it keeps the vaseline from seeping down onto the cover itself.

8. Follow the instructions on the can and be sure it's not cold out (they say above 70, but i did it at 60 without any problems). Paint it as you would any other object making smooth passes and exceeding the ends of the cover itself. Hold the can 10-12 inches away. Put a nice thick base coat on and heat it up to dry with a hairdryer or heat gun. Then continue putting on slightly thinner coats (about 4-6) about 10-15 minutes apart until you are happy with it. It's going to look shiny, like you painted it with regular paint, but dont worry.

9. On your second to last coat go in and heat up your over to 300 degrees, this step is optional, but VHT says it can take up to 48 hours for the winkle to fully appear and the paint to cure. The oven step eliminates this delay. The paint is durable to 350+ degrees, so you cant hurt it. Once you're done with your final coat, use a razor to scrape off the vaseline. This is a painstaking process, being careful not to touch the razor to the paint you dont want to scrape but at the same time not scratching the freshly polished surface beneath. Don't worry if you nick it a little, you can buff it out later. After that put that bad boy in the oven for 20 minutes. I set it on a baking pan so my mom wouldn't beat me for getting engine enamel in her oven . Don't mind the midly obtrusive smell it will go away

10. After it's done in the oven take it out with some gloves. It's still gonna be a little wet so pick it up from underneath. Pull off the masking tape and use a razor blade to scrape any remaining paint away. If you've accidently nicked it anywhere, spray some paint on a q-tip and fill it in. Once it wrinkles up it's pratically unnoticable.

11. After it cools off and dries put the valve cover gasket back in the groove on the valve cover. You may want to consider buying a new one if the one you have now is worn. Then put the 5 bolts back in giving them nothing more than a hand tightening (7 ft/lbs to be exact ) and reattatch the brackets.

12. Walla, go grab your camera and make all your H-T buddies jealous!

note - dont be a dummy and start your car with the valve cover off but we wont go into that"

Yea, no shit.

I guess someone forgot to remove the plunger from the toilet this morning.

You stated something that was incorrect. Instead of being a butt hurt whiney little bitch about it, why don’t you accept what I said as me helping you to be less ignorant. Hell I was even being nice about it. If I wanted to flame you for saying something stupid, trust me, you would know.
