Generally, a "race" header is so called because the tubes are very long and of equal length. This really hurts low-end power but improves power in the high rpms which is the range used while racing.
We have a "shorty" style header on our cars. This helps with low to mid-range power which is best for everyday driving.

Regular headers directly replace the existing OEM headers with either a 4-1 or 4-2-1 design.
Race headers on the other hand not only replace the OEM headers but also eliminates the catyliac converter by extending the header all the way to the mid-pipe.
While regular headers may be street legal, race headers are not.
