Trouble after CAI Install
Trouble after CAI Install
Today I installed my girlfriends CAI on her 2K2 EX. I intalled to first peace to the throttle and connected everything and by the time i was done that it was dark so moved the car under the light so i could attach the second peice. While I was under the car putting on the filter she went and pulled the ECU fuse without me knowing and placed it back in as she had read in the some instructions. Now everything is done and we go to turn the car on and it wont start. At this moment im baffolded because the car was working 20 mins ago and now all of a sudden its not. So then i asked her what she was doing in the fuse box and she told me so i checked out all the major fuses and everything seems fine. I even trying to jump start the car and no good. My only other possible idea is that she did have the radio on in the car while i was working on it but I cant remember if the o2 sensor was ever unpluged at that time. My only guess is that since the car worked and only traveled across the parking lot for a second is that the problem some how came from her taking out that ECU fuse, possibly the keys were on when she did it to. Well I have also unpluged the battery and have gotten no luck. This lookes like some kind of security method that honda has came up and they must have some kind of special way to reset verything. Does anyone have any ideas?.
woah
why didnt you just dis connect the bat.in the first place for the ecu instead?
damn...you need to check all your fuses and connections...even if you removed the factory intake and left the o2 sensor laying there.. with the throttle body totaly exposed the car should still start imo .. its not good for the car .. but it should still start right up.. def check all your fuses... even more so you might wanna get a wire tester.. cause honda aint gonna warrenty shi*
edit... thats just my opinion tho..

check for loose connections near the fuse box....that and make sure that the cai isnt touching wires where the battery is.maybe you have a short...is your engine turning over when you start or you just hear the starter solenoid?maybe your alternator is dead..

If the keys were in when she pulled the fuse, she might have fried the ECU when she put the fuse back in. I dunno much about all the little safegaurd features of honda's ECUs, but I do know a little something about how sensitive electronic components are.

there's no such thing as an O2 sensor for the intake, what you guys are talking about is the MAS (mass airflow sensor) O2 sensor is for the exhaust system.
check the fuse again, check if you have insert the fuse back in right... check if she insert in the RIGHT fuse...
was it an AEM intake? check the ground for the battery/fuse box then.. you relocated the ground so it may not have been grounded properly.
IMO, resetting the ECU via the fuse is the proper way to do it... just pulling the battery results in too many hassle, where you pull the plug on other things, radio, etc.
and, having the key in while pulling out the fuse shouldnt' cause any problem. I dont remember exactly but I think i have done that a few times myself.

hey cap, i lost the black rubber piece for my mass air flow sensor and right now it's just sitting there in the tube dangling in the 2nd hold on my cai, any problems that can occour with this not being secure in the hole? i put duck tape around it to make it stay for a while lol

I can't beleive how many of ya'll have had problems installing your AEM CAI. I will be the first to admit that I am the dumbest person when it comes to working on engines. Even I didn't botch my CAI instal. I even had to cut the pipe to add the Bypass Valve and I didn't mess it up.
Ya'll are making me feel like I can build a Ferrari engine.

Ok here is the latest. I went over there this morning and checked every last fuse with the fuse light and made sure that they were all in. All the fuses were good. I checked the air sensor as i did last night and it was good. I unpluged the negative wire on the battery and let it sit for awhile still no difference. I take off the second part of the intake and then check ALL off the wires, still no difference. Finally we notice that the check engine light flashes a couple of times before it shuts off as opposed to last night when it just stayed on. So we read the book and find out that the light doing that is a sign that the codes need to be reprogramed. So a this point there is no other possible reason other than the ECU is locked or whatever cause I just checked high and low on that car. All the lights work and even the air condition and heat still comes on so the battery is fine. Now I wonder how much its gonna cost her to get the ECU fix or what not.

I would take that CAI of and put your stock back on before you go back to Honda to get it reprogrammmed.
somone just told me that the problem is most likely that when she pulled the fuse she some how triggered the immobilizier. Add the fact that the factory radio isnt in the car anymore so I think that may have helped since it had once been said that removing the factory radio cause conflictions.
yea I thought about that to, but its pretty pointless since the intake really isnt the cause of the problem, and plus I dont think getting it reprogrammed is covered in the warrenty cause if it was i dont think they would have charged me to unlock my radio. But she will check tomorrow and if they say its covered under the warrenty then i guess i will be back out there tomorrow morning for a couple hours putting it back on.

hmm.
at first I was thinking you having the MAS dangling around was the issue... but the car should have started even if you dont have that plugged in... the idle will just be very screwy thats all...
swap back in the stock intake anyway, put everything back to normal and try it. it probably wont work, but it doesn't hurt to try.
I suppose the only plausible reason is somehow you have triggered the immobilizer...
do you know how to check the error code? maybe someone here with their HELMs manual can tell you how to, and they can look up the error code for you, so we can get down to the specific problem...

Yea somone told me that AEM products are under warrenty and that I dont need to take it off but im hearing many possible new stuff like something about the intake touching the battery post and I dont even know what the battery post is. I guess im just going to get up early tomorrow and go over there and put the stock air box in the best way that I can and hope its nothing more serious than just needing to disarm the immobilizier.
Your manual tells you how to reset the check engine codes. Try that.
Also if you have a spare ignition key, try that. Just a hunch that something happened to the resistor on your first key.
My guess is that when that fuse was pulled with the power on, it's tripped some protective device for the ECU and it just needs reset.
One little item to check would be to make sure all the fuses are in the right places. Even if they all check good, there are some empty places in the fuse box. There are also some relays involved in the start circuit, so you need to check those too.
It ain't that hard to put the stock air box back on anyhow when/if you go to the dealer. It's much safer that way and you might have to go back there for something else someday.
BTW: I believe the sensor in the intake is the AIR TEMPERATURE SENSOR. The MAP and TPS sensors are down on the throttle body itself.

ok so she takes the car to honda today and they tell her that the power feed to the starter was unpluged. I dont know how this is so when I checked all the wires around the area of the intake pipe. Where is starter located cause if it aint nowhere near the intake then its not possible. Anyway she had to pay the basic $79 charge for them looking at the car so it sucked for her. Im also glad that I didnt have to put that stock back on. After I drove it all I noticed was a little stronger pull betweeen 1st and 2nd and after that slight gain if any. Also I noticed that its quiet onlike on mine and other 6th gens where the intake is loud during VTEC so I guess the 7th Gen civics VTEC is quieter or somthing. Well thank you all for you possitive and helpful input even though we were all off because im still in shock. Well I guess the important thing is that her car is back on the road.
The starter is going to be down where the trans comes up to the engine, at the flywheel. That would be at the wide part of the bell housing. However, the power comes from a relay which is probably in the engine bay fuse box. It could have got disconnected at either end of the cable, but most likely at the fuse box.
