Just changed air cleaner - what's the large...

I just changed the air filter in my 2001 EX. The air cleaner sits inside of an air box. OK, that's normal. But what is the large box in front of the air clearner box I was tempted to try to open it, but I did not want to mess it up. The air cleaner fits into its airbox. So I can't figure out the purpose of the other box which is connected to the airbox. Also, what a weird lookng air filter I now understand why K&N has not made one for the 2001 Civic.

Thanks,

silverfox

K&N does make an air filter for our car.. theres alot of air intakes and short rams.. The second box is the air resignator which muffles the sound of the air intake. Kind of like the muffler on an exhaust system..

That box is a muffler for your intake. if you take it off, your intake is loud as hell

the box is the intake resonator. it controls the sound from ur intake. taking it out will yield louder intake volume and tone like what u hear from those aftermarket intake systems.

you'll lose low end torque too and mpg.

as for the filter, yeah its kinda weird. or er.. different.

K&N did eventually came out with a drop in filter for our car though. I have it on my car. works great.

I gained MPG and didn't notice any loss in power from deleting the resonator. I actually like the sounds...twice as deep as a CAI.
