Blown Motor...Does Honda Replace it??
I was wondering, If i were to downshift into 2nd lets say, at high speeds, and send the tach needle off the dashboard, would my engine blow? and would honda replace it, or repair it?

Umm........I've reached the rev limiter doing something similar to that and the engine just cuts out so that you don't blow your engine.
I guess it's different if you removed that feature.

Well, even if your engine cuts out and you're in gear, it'll still damage the engine since the wheels will force the engine to turn at a higher than intended speed. Go ahead...try it...5th to 2nd downshift at 80mph on the highway.

the reason why i ask is because there was a post not too long ago about an RSX that blew its motor doing the same thing. Someone said that the rev limiter works only when pushing the gas, not when downshifting...bope i dunno, just askin

I guess it depends. Neomagus fawked up his type S and Honda covered it. My cousin's friend misshifted his s2k and Honda covered that as well. On a side note, I also have a friend who misshifted his Celica GT-S and Toyota covered it as well. These 3 cars were 6-speeds BTW. see a trend?
EDIT: The S2000 motor needed new valves, valve springs, and retainers covered it as well. These 3 cars were 6-speeds BTW. see a trend?

if you miss a shift at or near redline in 3rd, and shift into 2nd instead of 4th, you will blow your engine. the wheels will force the engine to turn at speeds probably in excess of 9000 rpm, and you'll bend valves. bent valves are bad, and that's usually what people are talking about when they're talking about "blown" engines, at least when dealing with missed shifts. i doubt honda would replace that, since it happened due to human error and not manufacturer's defect.

Yeah right! First of all, you would have to be a complete idiot to try to downshift to third and put it in first. On top of that, your gearbox would not have allowed you to stick the gear in first going 60, it blocks the shift gate once you get like past 20. On top of that, if you actually managed to stick it in 1st gear going 60 mph, say goodbye to your engine.
i heard that about RSX too..
Someone test drove a RSX-S.... shifted it wrong from 5th to 2nd instead of going into 6th...
The whole engine stalled right away.... and burnt smell coming out from the engine... The engine couldn't start after that.. and need to have a tow truck to get it back to the dealer...

I have heard the same thing about the RSX, but only in the type S edition. I guess its a quirk that they are aware of and are in the process of correcting, but I guess if you down shift and miss a gear, say 3rd to 1st or something like that, it will blow the engine, or at least do some serious damage. Now as to how true that really is I dont know, because I havent seen or heard of anyone I know doing it.
But hey if anyone wants to take a car out for a test drive and see then be my guest.

I guess it is more common for pple to shift wrongly in a 6-speed car...
pple are more familiar to shift upto 5th speed .. and the 6th speed location is actually a reverse in a normal 5-speed car and never shift into that position from 5th..
I guess pple who is used to 5-speed tends to shift wrongly from 5th to 2nd or something, afraid that it will get into reverse.

Dont know about the Civic, but Acura will cover the K20A2 once under goodwill. Unlike the 5 spd trannies, the RSX gearbox dosnt seem to have "lockouts"...where as if you are traveling a certain speed it is harder to put it into a certain gear (ie back to first).
However yea, dont think because theres a rev limiter it will stop...trust me, I got to see my Type S' tach spin past 9k.
Those guys musta phuccked that up real bad. Once my engine stalled, that was it....however there were no smells from the engine bay. Also no leaks, nothing, the engine would click but not kick over. Don't know how much a D17A2 would cost, but to repair that kinda damage on a K20A2 it is about 9k (service on mine was $8833.43 under warrenty)

Honda will cover a blown motor due to a misshift the first time you do it. They call it the "goodwill" policy. Technicians are always bitching about it, because warranty work pays them about 1/2 than if a customer paid it out of their own pocket.
I bought my 01 used and had the engine blow 12 hrs later. I didn't buy it from a honda dealer and I think the problem was that they did an oil change and forgot to put oil back in. I got a bunch of crap from the dealer where I bought it. They tried to do everything possible from when it happened to keep from taking the blame, ended up getting a lawyer that day. When it got to honda they never gave me any problems. Replaced the engine under warranty (It did take around a month and half because it was back ordered), but it's not their fault. It got to the point where the manager at the place I bought it was avoiding us, so we tracked down where they sent it and from that point on the service manager at honda was giving us calls weekly to update on the status. I've had no problems since then and I'm very pleased with honda.

Since the question about whether honda will cover it has been answered, I will address the rev limiter talk...
All a rev limiter does is cut the fuel to the engine, thus not allowing you to rev any higher as you accelerate. However, if you mis a shift say from 3rd, and you accidentally put it into 2nd and not 4th, then the engine WILL REV well beyond your redline since the wheels force it to once you disengage the clutch. This could send your RPM's well beyond 10,000rpm or in my case, even 12,000rpm. And the above stated damage can occur. (valvetrain stuff)
I have done this twice in my S2000.... gone into 2nd instead of 3rd at like 80 or 90mph.... luckily my car has taken it, and nothing was damaged. It's an easy thing to do on an S2k since it's a mere 20mm throw from gear to gear. (shortest throw on any production vehicle)
