Can i put synthetic oil in my manual tranny?

I know i should be using honda mtf but its not available. So does it do any harm to put some 5w40 full synthetic engine oil in the manual transmission?

I had a roommate in college who used 10w30 for pretty much every fluid in his old beatup truck. Engine, brake fluid, tranny, etc. It'll work, but it might not be the best thing for the car.

hey guys I am thinking of putting synthetic gear oil in my tranny soon... I think we need 75w90, anyways I know where the drain plug is, i guess you gotta use a 3/8" drive ratchet with no socket to put in that square hole under the car. Where do we fill it? I read somewhere you have to like pump the fluid in from under the car some how?!?! Couldn't we just unscrew that huge bolt that had to come off for the CAI and pour the fluid in that way? i think we need like 1.9 quarts but I'm not sure.

The fill plug is just above the drain plug. Its a 17mm bolt i think.

Seems like you could just use a funnel with a tube coming off of it.

The question he asked was not worded correctly. It seems he wants to put engine oil in his transmission, when he is really asking if it is ok to put sythentic oil in his car (at least that is what I hope he is asking).

It is NOT f**king safe to put engine oil in your transmission man!!! not by a long shot...they are completely different animals all together...transmission fluid (both automatic and manual) is more consistant with a detergant than an oil. At operating temperatures it acts more like a hydraulic fluid than anything else (building pressure for the various planetary systems, bands, etc) in the transmission....engine oil does not operate like this....

you can use engine oil in the transmission if you want to...but you have been warned and that's all I can do for you.

I just called the Honda dealer today and asked them if synthetic oil like mobil 1 10w-30 would be ok for my car. The guy said that if I use anything other than 5w-20, and something happens to my car because of it, the warranty is void. Maybe you should take that into consideration. For me, i'll just stick with 5w-20. It's cheaper, and its not like synthetic oil will give me more hp or make my engine that much cleaner. stick with what the dealer says. You cant go wrong. You need to find GEAR OIL not ENGINE oil... anyways you need a 75w90 type GEAR OIL and you should be fine, I am thinking of going with royal purple.. if you put engine oil in your tranny that is of a different weight you will seriosuly screw up your trans....
