Install sidemarkers? Watch out for rust!

2 months after the install, I figured i'd look around the sidemarker hole for rust. I put some touch-up paint around the edges when I first installed them, but I knew I didn't do too good of a job..

Sure enough. I went and put touch-up paint around the entire hole this time and waited for it to dry before snapping them back in place.

If you want to prevent rust, you should put rust-proofing primer on before the touchup paint. That goes for dents and scratches that goes to the metal too.

If you still have some room to play with... you may want to put a wire wheel in a dremel and clean off the rust before you cover it back over. Hopefully there's still enough room around the edges of the sidemarker before the hole starts to poke out around the edges. Some rubber striping around it, or between the fender and the marker to keep the water out.

Yes, but even keeping the water out won't keep the moisture out. Humidity is a biotch and will sneak in there anyways. It will take longer to rust but eventually it will as well. The best thing to do is grind it down with a dremel and put rust proof primer and touch up paint. Rustoleum makes a good primer foru outdoor patio furniture that should work great.

I'm not planning on my putting sidemarkers on my car. I would rather have smooth lines with nothing interrupting the flow. Ahhh, How I dream of the day when I get my door handles shaved.

Since you already have a little rust I would recommend a product called OneStep. You can put this stuff right over top of rust (although I would suggest cleaning it off). I goes on as a white liquid and dries shiny black. excellent stuff.
