Trunk Popper Installed!
I've been wanting to install a trunk popper for awhile now. I have the button on my remote just for that purpose and i was never able to use it. Upon some research into the archives whiterabbit used a latch from a 4dr accord that supposidly bolted right up. He said it had only one additional wire which u feed +12V to to actuate the built in solenoid which opens the trunk. But he could never get a part number. Now a nice factory looking bolt up deal souned nice to me so off to the dealer i went. I asked the service guy for a service manual on the accords (98-2000). I couldnt find what he was referring to...i did find 2 different latches...one for accords with keyless entry and ones without...both of which had some wierd harness on it that hooked up to the accords' alarm system. The service guy was stumped...real helpful tho. He liked my idea and made copies of the sections of the manual we were looking at!! Being bored one day i cruised on over to http://www.handa-accessories.com and looked under 98-2000 Accord Accessories...and lo and behold there it was...aptly titled "Trunk Opener" at $25.20.
Here's the installation instructions for it:
Link
It even comes with a SPST relay if you need it to wire it to your alarm. And yes...bolts right up. The only things i really had to do was reroute the cable to pull forward instead of sideways (accords have to do that too, its in the instructions) There was plenty of slack. And then run a single wire under my door sill behind the rear panels to the trunk...then i just routed it up along side the cable. Works wonderfully. I even took the liberty of replacing my trunk shocks with ones that are rated 50lbs so now my trunk opens automagically upon pressing the button or pulling the cable...pretty smooth

i could do that...and take pics...but i'll have to wait till it stops raining but its not hard at all...simply detach the cable from the latch (have to tug a bit) and then snake the cable up so that it will come out directly in front of the latch itself...you might have to pull a little bit of the cable forward on the clips that hold it on the trunk lid bracket to give you enough slack...

so your telling me that since i got the trunk pop option on my alarms i can go to honda and get a latch for an accord and install it directly into the civic (sedan or coupe) and wire it directly to my aftermarket alarm system to pop the trunk open with no problems??

that's exactly what i'm saying...i'm pretty sure the stock trunk latch setup is the same for both sedans and coupes...could be wrong tho...
edit: oh..i'm not sure about the retuning the accord keyless entry...it might be possible...i havnt really looked into it...but see how the accord and civic keyless entry systems hook up..they might be strikingly similar

Did you wire this to a aftermarket alarm system? Did you have to use the relay when you wired it up? You just took one wire to a +12 volt output? I have a Aftermarket alarm, Clifford. Can you clarify the wiring......thanks man.

yeah i installed it to my aftermarket alarm using the relay that comes with the kit (just a standard SPDT relay)...i used this site for more information about relays...
since my alarm has a negative 2nd channel output...the wire associated with the button on my remote would become a ground when the button is pressed...so i had to convert this negative output to a positive one using the relay...here's a pic of how i hooked mine up...

Terminals 87/86 taps into the constant +12v source on the fusebox
Terminal 85 goes to the negative output wire coming from my alarm
Terminal 30 goes to the trunk popper...
If your alarm has a positive output then i dont think you'll even need a relay...just wire it directly...i think

So, let me ask a stupid question. Do I need to buy anything else? I already have the alarm with the trunk popper function, just needed the popper. Is there ANYTHING else? Or do I just follow the directions to hook it up? Thanks.

the directions that come with it are for the accord and the accord only...so u cant follow those..heh...
aside from the trunk latch itself..you'll need some connectors (butt connectors, blade connectors, whatever you'd like to use)...heat shrink tubing...wire...a multimeter is useful if you got one...i can't really think of anything else...if u need any help on anything specifically just let me know

kind of difficult to do a diy because alot of alarms are different than mine...the place that installed your alarm could probably do it pretty easily...you could at least unbolt the old one and put the new one up there..then all they would have to do then is wire it to your alarm
It looks like the same thing basically that we have on ours. I'm going to do it. I'm going to do it. I called the place that installed my alarm and asked them about it. $75 dollars for a solenoid, I then mentioned this part from the Accord and he was like, OH, that will work and labor will be like $45 dollars. Or, I can get one of my mechanically inclined friends to help me.
This is gonna rock.
Thanks man.

how bout this...give us a DIY with pics of the physical installation except for the actual part to wire it to the alarm itself so that we can install it all and have an electronics shop just finish off the wiring part??

a slightly cheaper but a lil more ghetto way is to use trunk solenoids. these are about $12 for a generic one. you'll also need to buy a relay if you want it to work with an alarm. just hook up the solenoid to the latch and wire it to the relay the same way you would for ohmysacs.. but ya this is only $10 cheaper and doesnt look as professional.
trunk solenoids (believe it or not) are strong enough to open your door. my door pops are 9 pound solenoids, and ive seen a pic floating around here with some guy in here with trunk solenoid. those are the solenoids in my coworkers civic (99 ex) and his door pops work great. (took his installers three days to figure it out tho )
but yeah, you dont need 35 pound solenoids to pop small honda doors. so if you cna get the solenoids for $12, maybe you cna save some money where i sure as hell didnt (i paid $160 for my pop kit.......)

Just wondering...
Would it be possible to take the car to Honda and have them do it? I am not worried about cost, I am just wondering if they would be able to do it, or simply give me a baffled look and ask me to leave.
