How Does VTEC Work?

Hey everyone, I am sure most of you know what VTEC is and I know what it does, gives a big boost of power to the wheels, but I am not sure how it works. All I know is that is has something to do with the cam shaft and from what I heard, when VTEC is activated, the valves are allowed to stay open a little longer then when VTEC is not engaged, which helps to get the extra boost of power. Can you all please explain in a little more detail? Thanks!

dude cut him some slack

the way a vtec camshaft works is there are 3 lobes. 2 of the same size on either side of a larger lobe. when the engine is at idle, or rpms under a set rpm, the 2 smaller outside lobes "activate" if you will the rocker arms and thus the valves. when the engine reaches a specified rpm, a solenoid locks the 2 rocker arms together and forces them to use the center, larger lobe, which causes the valves to open further and stay open longer.

"ricer" *sigh*

Being ignorant doesn't make you a rice boy.

At least he asked. I give him credit for that.

yea, I know it isn't a big boost, I own a civic ex as well, but without VTEC, a civic would be alot slower. The VTEC does make a difference!

don't sound too cocky . the non Vtec civics put out only 7-10 less horsies at the wheel....only because we have 2 Catalytic converters unlike the Vtec variant which runs cleaner naturally. By simply changing rom a DX/LX header to an EX we gain about 4 horsies... the SOHC VTEC is great for the environment..but it's not a real power adder...it's a fuel saver/emmision control device in your engine...
