Downpipes???
Downpipes???
What do you guys have for DPs? What kind of performance gains out there. What about fit and the o2 sensors? Loudness? Just want to get this topic started since i did a search and found not much
Do you mean a header? I'm pretty sure there aren't any aftermarket downpipes or even if there is much gain there. A header consists of the pipes that channel the exhaust gasses out of the head. A downpipe is the piece right after the header that goes to the catalytic converter. As far as I know there is a DC sports 2 piece 4-2-1 type for the EX and HP racing makes a 1 piece header, not sure if its 4-2-1 or 4-1... Both are pretty good I think. But ask other members who have 'em for some real feedback...
I already have the DC 4- Header, AEM CAI, and Thermal R&D Catback Exhaust, but none of that is really going to live up to it's full potential if i dont have the downpipe is it? It's like the chain is only as strong as it's weakest link saying isnt it. I mean sure i have the capability to flow more air through most of the system but even if one area is restricted then the entire system is limited by the max flow of that section...right?

Hp makes the 4-1 race header w/high-flow cat and they also sell a seperate downpipe. Seems like another manufacturer makes one as well, but I can't remember whom.
You will need a simulator to run a high-flow/catless downpipe.
I would imagine that the gain would be felt by your **** but wouldn't be a huge one.

It is true that your exhaust system is restricted by the smallest diameter. You could probably goto an exhaust shop and get a custom one made for pretty cheap. There aren't o2 sensors in the downpipe, so you don't need to weld in bungs for them. All the shop needs to do is weld up a pipe and then install it. So you could then have whatever diameter downpipe you wanted. However, I don't think you will see much of a difference. A probable senario is that you could lose bottom end torque, but perhaps gain a couple hp in the top end. I don't like the idea of losing too much bottom end torque, seeing that I when I drive I don't keep it at 6k rpm. But give er hell and see what happens. Thats part of the tuning expereince... I have i/h/e and definately have noticed a decrease in low-end power. Especially, when I just had the cai and cat-back. The dc header did aid low to mid-range power to my surprise though. Once I hit 4500k, she starts to scream till redline. Even at 4k she starts to scream.
If you have a 5sp, a good launch will compensate for this loss if doing a 0-60 or 1/4 mile. While cruising, a simple downshift will get right back up into the power.
It's very simple really, no bolt-ons for the best power curve in the daily commute, and open up the air-flow for max acceleration.
