Question for those with Turbos

This question is only for those that currently have a turbo on their Civic: what boost are you running, which turbo did you use (t3, t3/4, etc), where did you get a manifold, and what fuel system upgrades did you make? I am putting together a custom kit, and wanted some more advice from those that have done it.

The only numbers I've heard are like 5psi, which I know isn't much, but I think they were being really safe about it.

honda tuning says that the current headless fuel system can only handle like 40 hp increase. That includes like turbos and nitrous. I am trying to see how much it would be to put a return line from the engine to the tank and not just in the tank.

But if you replace the pump, line, and injectors, it can handle a lot more than that. Lancer Revolutions (not the evolution, it's a 2 door non rally version) have been running a returnless fuel system for the last two years, and they can handle a lot of hp increase if you just change those three things and run a fuel computer.

I already know I'm running larger injectors, with two additional injectors before the throttle body controlled by a Haltech with its own MAP sensor for boost, that way the stock computer handles all pre-boost and then once it hits boost, the haltech unit and it's two injectors come in and increase the fuel to handle the boost. This maintains the drivability and fuel economy while I'm not in boost (before 3,500 rpms we estimated) and then it's still safe while in full boost (after 4,500 rpms we think). We're thinking this setup should be more than adequate, but I wanted to see what everyone else was doing to compare drivability and cost, the Haltech is not a cheap computer.

Hey d00d

I don't currently have a turbo, but I'm in the midst of buying one.

My plan is to go at 4psi until I can upgrade. I think 4/5 is the general 'safe' marker for people like me, who haven't upgraded ANYTHING.

If you upgrade your fuel lines, though, you can run probably up to about 8/9 being 'safe'. If you do some engine internals work, you can go as high as you like! Keep in mind, you can only squeeze so much out of a poor little 1.7L tho

Oh, and do you have an intercooler?

Lemme try this again:
I'm doing this -
4psi with just plumbing + turbo (no intercooler or anything)
6psi with intercooler (not exactly a whole lot safer, but still...)
10 psi with upgraded fuel lines, fuel computer (the apex one is dang nice), turbo timer (not needed, but nice to have), and probably a bit of internal work.

I'll be happy with just the 4psi boost ( roughly 32HP ), so I can't imagine going up even higher!!! Cant wait!

Keep us posted with your results, though, so we can all live vicariously through you

Cheers

The fuel system I will be using (Haltech with 2 extra injectors) can handle flow rates consistent with up to 30 psi, the only thing limiting me is the engine itself. I will have an intercooler, and will be doing internals as soon as JE gets off their *** and brings the prototype pistons to production.

Oh, in that case, I'd try it out at 8...and if it works good for a while, keep on raising the bar!

no pun intended hehehe

I think the most I would push it, would be 1 BAR, though. But...I'm paranoid, and would probably run 10.

Don't listen to me, I'm just rambling.

Let us/me know how it goes. I wanna go down the custom route for my civic...

Which turbo are you using? the T3? The T4 seems too big IMO.

T3. Was planning on starting around 5, hitting 7-8 soon after, maxing out at 10 for race until I build the motor.
