question for members with REAL HID.
i installed my kit with the d2s bulbs today and it seems that the stock headlight heat shield is kind of redundant since the d2s bulbs already have a built-in heat shield. i want maximum light output but at the same time i dont want to blind people. did those of you with the d2s kit remove the stock heat shield? thanks.

is it just me or isn't the other way around?
i think d2r is the retrofit, and the d2s is the regular projectors

now that i think of it, i think the d2s is for projectors and the d2r (no heat shield) are for reflective housings but nevertheless the d2s still fits in my stock headlights housing and it is still bright. i got the d2s only because i remember someone telling me that i need d2s. oh well.
So, do you have the D2R bulb...the one that has the grey paint on the bulb or do you have the D2S bulb with no paint on there. The D2S bulb are used in projectors only and the D2R bulb are used in refective housings. I have had both and tried both.
I used the stock headlight housings and just stuck a D2R bulb in there and the beam pattern and output were shoddy. There was a lot of glare and that mean shinning into on-comming traffic. So, I fiddled around with them. I made my own glare sheild and made sure the bulb was at the focal point. This corrected the glare, but the output was worse than before. there are companies that sell bulbs with glare sheilds and H4 bases. But, I never bought a kit with those bulbs or the bulbs themselves. I got my hands on a RX300 headlight and put those HID housings into my stock headlight. The output and beam pattern were great. But, they were too big. I seen some people use is300 and ls430 HID headlights to do conversions.
But, I tried something else. I have used A6 HID projectors and X5 projectors and those have the best output and beam pattern. I am trying to get my hands on some TT or 3 series HID projectors because those are smallest.

i have the d2s bulbs - the ones with the heat shield on the bottom or glare shield as you referred to. actually, light output is awesome but i was wondering if i can get better output by removing the headlight housing heat shield since the d2s bulbs already have the heat/glare shields.
You should not take off the factory glare sheild. If you did that, it would glare into on-comming traffic. Notice how the H4 bulb is painted at the top of the bulb, the D2S bulb does not. Could you please take a pic of your headlight shinning on a wall to see the beam pattern and etc. I want to see what it is like with the glare sheilds on the bulb. Did you make those yourself or did they come with the bulb? Also, what kit did you get?
Thanks

i got the 6000k vision kit from ebay for $315, but it did not come with a relay kit so i had to spend another $30 for a high-wattage h4 wire harness and relay. the glare shield comes with the d2s bulb. i'll take some pics when night falls, check back later.
the pics don't do it much justice, the lights are better than they appear
