Home Made CAI , has someone done it?
Hey there , i'm new on the board but i've been reading it for a while...
I was wondering if anyone had some info on making a custom made CAI for the 7th gen cause i found some for the 5th and 6th..
I just bought a set of 17" enkei rs-6 and i am quite low on $$$ so if i could save a bit on this , it would rock...

nope never been done before, never gonna happen, come on if you say you've been reading then your eyes have been closed. This has been brought up on more than one occasion probably around 10 times. Keep up the good reading. [IMG]i/expressions/laugh2.gif[/IMG] Truthfully now some have experimented and have claimed results, but it would be better to save some money and get the Injen or AEM CAI.

Ummmm... dont be stupid and try to make a homemade ghetto intake... get off ur butt, walk down to McDonalds... get an application for employment, fill it out... get hired... work like a week and a half and go get an intake... come on man, spending the $$ is worth it.. just my $.02

Yep, someone just posted a thread on their DIY for a ghetto style intake. I suppose it would work ok. I suggests that you enjoy your wheels and wait till you have enough to buy a quality replacement for the stock airbox.
there's definitely a way to do a home made CAI, and it's definitely possible to make one that might match the quality of AEM or Injen. however, it's hard as hell. unless you're very good with stuff like this, you probably shouldn't try it. i'm an idiot, though, and by the looks of intake prices, i might go about doing this myself

For those who flamed me , c'mon guys what's the point ? I bought a brand new car , some nice wheels , just asking if theres a way to make a custom thing and i get the "go get a job and buy it" thing... WTF?!?!?
How do you think im paying my damn car?? don't be stupid...
i work my *** 50 hours a week to pay my sh*t so i just wanted to see if i could save a bit on this...

IMO, the stock ones are better overall...
but, if u want the sound, and the suppose increase in performance.. go with ebay intakes..
there's currently one thats like around 50 bucks thats a replica of AEM's... you get the exact same pipping and hardware... except the filter is some cheapy one... grab that, throw the filter away, and buy a K&N one.. you just got urself something practically the same as AEM's...
no CARB numbers to exempt though, if you live in CA.

another thing is that the AEM replica has a poorly insulated pipe. put some header wrap around the pipe, or spray it with ceramic paint, and you should be good to go. some of the cheapo intakes have k&n filters on 'em too
you newbies, of course it's been done. all you gotta do is go over to home depot, buy some pipes (2 if you wanna make it a cold-air) and some clamps, and a nice filter. put it together, and u got yoself a home made intake. Note: do not try this if you are not a handyman.
#1 ... If you make a DIY intake, never never NEVER use PVC piping. As that heats up it will release a toxic fume that enters the cabin and could potentially poison the blood stream.
#2 ... Its really not that hard at all to replicate an AEM intake for a fraction of the cost. I build CAI for any car for the cost of materials (runs $80-$120 depending on car). My CAI systems are stainless steel with ceramic coating to be heat resistant and rust proof. Not only do my systems actually out perform AEM (intake runs cooler then AEM) but they are also reducable. This means my CAI systems can be reduced to SRI. I have already build a full system for a 7th gen owner on this board. With his help we have actually been perfecting the system to be even more reliable then its first generation model.

i made a ghetto ram air intake system... it's just temporary till K&N ready to install the prototype into my car... 
basically my ghetto ram air thingee is made outta dryer pipe that you can buy from any hardware store and duct tape... keep the black air filter box in place and remove the air silencer box off to the left side of the engine compartment.... all that thing does is silence the air by restricting the mass flow straight to the throttle body... anyways... take one end of the dryer pipe and snake it so one end connects to the filter box and the other end is chillin' under the battery.... that's where the cai filter on a real system would go.... use zip ties to keep it away from touching the fan blades....uhhhh... and there you go to cheap som-bish[IMG]i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif[/IMG]
NOTE: it won't sound like a real cai cause the filter would be muffled by not only the box but the length of the pipe as well... you'll notice it growling a lil more than stock but not loud enough to turn heads... so blah!
