Transaxle Bearing Noise
Transaxle Bearing Noise
Hi to all,i posted this last night, not sure of the correct page,I`m new here.I have a 99 Civic DX,with 232,000 miles.Daily work car, with lot`s steep&rough road.I 1st changed the gearlube@ 170,000 K with motor oil, then just went to Honda manual gearlube.I`ve been hearing the noise for about 6-8 months, and it`s louder every week, and this week it became considerable more noticeable.
While pulling up hills,if you are going aprox 25mph,in 3rd gear, than go to 2nd,noise is twice as loud, lower gear worse, higher geat less noise. It can be heard in any gear, just very low noise in 4th,and 5th gear.It seems to be on the input side of tranny, not output side, like some kinda bearing whine. It`s related to engine rpm going into tranny.I did a search on these noises here, but others problems were different. As soon as you push clutch in,it goes away.No noise while sitting still idling engine, with clutch in,or out while not in motion.I am unable to feel any vibration.
Hope others might know what bearing is failing, and how hard to get to.I`ve put a couple timing belts on,new head gasket&head job,new Honda piston rings@ 100,000k,but have not been in a manual transmission since I split the cases on that 1966 Honda 50(in 69) trying to fix blown 2nd gear,it ended up in a box!
Appreciate any ideas,Dizz

Re: Transaxle Bearing Noise
No,none at all.About a year ago,if I shift fast into 2nd,as if pulling out quickly,I get a little grind into 2nd,as if sync wear, probally normal with my milage,I still have original CV joints&have not touched front end in any way, other than brakes.I drove thru mud going to work for years,a testament to the quality of these cars.As far a diff. wine,it would be variable with wheel speed, mine is with engine speed.
I have had considerable wheel bearing problems on the front,a proplem that I didn`t have with my 94 Civic, although the bearing assy. looks the same, they get water in&rust&ruin bearing, not a good water seal,me thinks.
As a side note,I bought a new 07 Civic for my wife,as far as I`m concerned they ruined them.I kept it a couple days, ride was much more harsh than my 99,and that dang park brake lever stuck in my right knee, and I`m 5' 9"!All to make a little storage shelf.
Thanks,Dizz
