Compression test

When I do the test, do I remove one plug at a time, leaving the other plugs inside? And also, is it okay if I just remove the rotor or disconnect the coil?

Re: Compression test

you should unplug the injectors too. its been a while since i did this but i dont think it matters if the plugs are in or not since you are only testing one cylinder at a time. take the plug out, loosely screw the tester in, take a reading, and move to the next one. gas pedal should be floored when cranking the car around 8-10 times for each reading.

Re: Compression test

Here's the method I used. It's a good video done on an Acura. He disconnected the distributor right at the connector btw.

So I did a dry test but I get really low readings:

1: 90
2: 80
3: 70
4: 80

Re: Compression test

****. I hope the previous ownder didn't money shift it, or me for that matter! I will have to check the timing belt to see if it's off a tooth. Could it be because I didn't keep the throttle open during the test?

Re: Compression test

Yup, same reading, 90psi on all cylinders. Cam and crank are at TDC. I'm going to try a bottle of auto-rx, and if it doesn't improve it then screw it, nothing I can do. I'm still getting 36mpg with city/highway combined.

It just can't be though. 90psi? 135 is minimum. Wouldn't it be running very poorly? It seems to run fairly normal. The gauge I'm using is from autozone, oem brand, maybe it's leaking...

Re: Compression test

yeah thats pretty low and they are consistent. i think maybe the tester is not that great or maybe some pressure is leaking out? if car runs okay, id say dont worry about it. main thing is they are close to the same across each cylinder. with that good gas mileage, i would say its prolly normal and maybe something with the tester isnt working right.

It's definitely the tester, the car wouldn't run at all at 90psi. I'm going to tell them when I return it. Thanks gearbox.
