road trip = mx issues...

97 civic lx 112300
First off I'm using my phone so search function is limited. I had a low idle problem about 6 months ago fixed by checking and correcting ignition timing.last mo I had a no start fixed with a junkyard distributor and coilpacks. No issues other than that.
300 miles into my roadtrip today I pull into get gas and the familiar low idle is back. Tach shows almost 0 rpm and rough idle. I'm leaning towards iacv but not sure how to test it.
While idling low I turned on the ac. It struggled for a second then rpm goes to 750 ish. Makes me think iacv is ok, but I don't know if that OS a definitive test.

What else can I trouble shoot?
Gas is always 87 from shell stations. New fuelfilter and air filter 3000 ago. Throttle body cleaned 1000 ago, I skipped iacv though. Any other ideas or tests?

Re: road trip = mx issues...

Is there any chance it might be the throttle position sensor? How would I test it?

Re: road trip = mx issues...

try cleaning iacv. its not tps unless the rpm also goes UP by itself past 700. if its just idle drop and stall, its iacv. when the throttle plate is closed (no gas), the only way for the engine to run is using air from the iac valve port. not enough air (from clogging or the sensor cannot move properly to let in more air), and engine dies.

Re: road trip = mx issues...

have you unplugged the sensor and see how the rpm changes?

I had a problem similar to yours, ignition distributer was broken. My friend there told me, to change also ignition plugs and cables... it can be the activator for your broken ignition distributer, never had problems again.

Gearbox- I caved and just got a junkyard throttlebody. Problem solved. Not sure what the actual culprit was but its hopefully done acting up.

nice, good to hear it worked out. those things are always pretty sensitive if something gets out of calibration.

It was probably the iacv, you cleaned it but that might not of helped any, you might of just needed a new one. The rotor in it could of been bad.
