Hi, I'm new here.
A few hours ago I bought my first honda engine ($50 for a long block), the guy said it came out of a 96 civic. The motor has a knock in it so I'll have to do a little work to the engine (not sure what yet).
I'm going to attempt to put it in a vw camper van, it has the old 091 6rib tranny (4 spd). I've found a company that will make a custom bell housing and engine mounts, etc... But I'm just not sure what to do about the wiring?
the wiring harness for the engine came with it, but that's all I have.
Do I really have to buy an ECU or whatever other crap just get some cylinders moving?
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated, I'm in over my head, but that's how like it.

to sum it up your going to need a working car minus brakes, suspension, body frame, and interior you will need an ecu in order for it to work properly as unfortunately thats how fuel injection works. The only thing i can say to this is have somebody do it for you if your asking these kinds of questions before you even get started and as for the knock be glad you only dropped 50 bucks

well, I've seen so many mods for this engine I didn't know if there was a company that made an easier ECU, or something that would let me cheat a bit. I guess I'm going to the salvage and ripping apart a civic (does it have to be make and year specific? or is there a range of honda ECU's that might work?) As far as the motor I had intended to buy one of these ebay rebuild kits for a couple hundred, is that a mistake? I don't know the quality of those things.

well, this is my last post, i'm going to part that engine out on ebay, it won't work in my van, apparently it turns backwards and I don't want to turn my engine upside down. screw honda

Maybe u should have done a little research BEFORE dropping money on a motor (EPIC FAIL for you). Due to your poor thought pattern I'm going to overlook the Screw Honda comment. You obviously meant that you would love to be dry-raped by a Honda.

did you even try to guess what transmission you would need? btw I am more then sure that this can be done with the right knowledge and proper motormounts..

You could have picked up a K-Series Motor since they spin the other way...but they are way more than $50.
