autometer shift light

Hi there, I have a auto meter shift light. I have had it for about a year, but never got it to work. Is there any way to find out if it work? I connected it to the neg and the pos side of the battery, but it did not light up. how can i test it to see if it works with out actually mounting it in my car? Also, where is a good spot to wire the neg and pos side of the wires into the car? I was reading the DIY on how to hook up the tach, because it is on the same idea. BUt I do not know how to hook somthing into my fuse box. ANy help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

ground one wire (usually the black one) and wire the red into the front end of a fuse (the accessory plug fuse works best because it is controlled by the ignition). hope that helps.
