Honda Del Sol Gurgling Noise

Just got me a 95 del sol manual trans with 88k. New Timing/water pump. When I drive it in the morning, or after it hasn't been driven in a while, there's a slight gurgling noise upon acceleration... it almost sounds like a bus accelerating. Yet it goes away after 10-15 minutes. It doesn't have to do with the weather, as it's been in the mid 70's lately. So does anyone have any ideas?

Re: Honda Del Sol Gurgling Noise

yeah thats prolly air in the coolant as it rushes thru your heater core behind the dash. sounds like a water rushing noise almost. did you just have the water pump and stuff done recently? my guess is they never bled the air out. when car is cold, take off the radiator cap and start the motor. let it warm up to operating temp by lightly revving the engine upto 3k rpm. turn heater on full blast with fan on max and look at the coolant in the radiator. keep adding coolant to keep the level at the top. you should start seeing bubbles coming out, just keep adding coolant til the level stays at the top and the bubbling stops. if bubbling doesnt stop after 20 mins, you may have a blown headgasket. when done, put the cap back on.

SWEET! My civic does the same thing, I knew there was air in the radiator, but it always seemed full. I never knew you had to have it cold and then heat it up. I will have to try this!

Re: Honda Del Sol Gurgling Noise

the process is basically to purge air out of the heater core. turning the heater on causes coolant to circulate there and you must have the cap open otherwise the air will never get out.

Re: Honda Del Sol Gurgling Noise

So is that the steps you have to take after flushing coolant?

Re: Honda Del Sol Gurgling Noise

Ok thanks. I also heard when changing coolant, or when your draining it, you have to do something else after unscrewing the bolt at the bottom of radiator? Like there was still coolant in the engine? How to you go about getting that out, or is unscrewing the bolt at bottom of radiator all you have to do when draining it?

-thankz

Re: Honda Del Sol Gurgling Noise

All that ^^^^^ is basically asking how to actually change/flush the coolant system. Didn't really intend on this being for this thread but if someone could tell me the steps to do so, would really appreciate it.

-thankz

Re: Honda Del Sol Gurgling Noise

yeah i remember there is something else you need to do to drain the engine coolant. ill try and look it up later. but really so long as you get a majority of the fluid, its not gonna matter much. there used to be a diy somewhere on here too.

Re: Honda Del Sol Gurgling Noise

Thanks, gearbox. I'll try that as soon as I can and post the results here.

There's another kind of unrelated question I have about my del sol. After driving it for a while and then parking it (turning it off) there will be this metal on metal light clanking sound with intervals of a few minutes between each one. It eventually stops, but what does this have to do with the engline cooling off? Is it a concern I should look into (it's still under the dealer's 2 week warranty)?

Thanks!

Re: Honda Del Sol Gurgling Noise

Thats the metal returning to original shape after heating up, when it cools it makes that noise, perfectly normal. Its basic expansion and contraction.
