Re: what kind of welder do i need?

It doesn't take a big welder to do the job. You are just making tack welds and the metal is thin. But that second one looks like a stick welder to me.. it may work but they are harder to use. Look into a mig/flux welder. They are the best bang for the buck. You can use flux core to learn, and get a gas connection later to step up to mig.

wow.. ***...

i still say get a flux core welder at the minimum. trust me a stick welder is much harder to use, and its easier to blow through the metal. i got a flux core for like 2 something brand new.

i don't plan on welding up a roll cage either, but a decent welder is a wonderfully handy tool to have around if you need it. with a die grinder a welder and a drill you can fab up pretty much anything you need to. even if you just plan on basic mods, its nice to not have to pay a welder for anything.

There's no point in running a stick welder unless it's a TIG welder. Buzzboxes aren't good for much unless you need to weld cast iron.

Re: what kind of welder do i need?

good old fashion wire welders work wonders. i welded in an entire floorpan with one and it has held for 6 years so far.
