low idling prob.. any help?

i have a 99 civic lx 5 speed, with 115xxx miles. i replaced all filters and changed all fluids. The problem is that once in a while when it rains or snows out my car idles very low and when i put the clutch in it just turns off on me. Is this common with most Honda civics? i though it could be the distributor getting moisture in it, but it doesn't happen every time it rains just very randomly. i need to change the timing belt but will this solve my idling problem thanks, if there's already a thread on it just let me know thanks.

Re: low idling prob.. any help?

clean out the idle air control valve and the fast idle thermo valve with carb cleaner. they should be easy to spot bolted near or on the air intake parts like throttle body and intake manifold. same problem i just fixed on a 92 accord. it used to stall out all the time in cold weather, now the idle never drops.

Re: low idling prob.. any help?

it actually took maybe 5-10 starts before the ecu "learned" from what i cleaned and then its been fine ever since. before even when i would start the car cold and not touch anything, the idle would drop and engine shut off. now it levels off like normal. so after you clean everything give it a bit to figure out what happened or you can reset the ecu manually by disconnecting the battery but its easier to just wait.

Re: low idling prob.. any help?

ok so i can just use some carb cleaner and spray it into the idle air control valve. i dont have to worry about the cleaner because its fine if it gets sucked in the engine

Re: low idling prob.. any help?

yeah carb cleaner is fine, let it evaporate tho for a few minutes before installing. you have to take off the valve to clean it anyway. its the piece that has coolant hoses going into it. there may be a second "fast idle" valve next to it. clean that one too.
