My buddy has a 97 civic hx it has the d16 vtec. It is a automatic and hes been having a problem lately. His car has a rough idle that fluctuates rpms only when in gear at a stop light or something but idles fine in neutral or park, Once it is warm after like 20 min of driving it will stop. It also feels like the gears are slipping when he goes to take off when it is still cold. Other than the rough idle and gear slip feeling it drives great.Any help would be great.

check the idle air valve and clean it, also the fast idle thermo valve if you have it, and the throttle body. clean out the whole intake system. its prolly just carbon buildup.
