Rebuilding an engine. Any suggestions?
Rebuilding an engine. Any suggestions?
I have a 93 civic dx coupe that's been sitting in my garage for almost 2 years. i originally bought it to fix it up and finish the body work, paint it , and sell it. but that never happened. and with my truck getting 10 mpg i figured why the hell not get this thing on the road. it runs and drives but it has 173k on the clock. and i know its got potential i just don't want to do anything with that many miles on the car. i thought about getting a swap but don't have the money for that. so me and my friend are probably just going to pull the motor and rebuild it. the thing is i know almost nothing about rebuilding a motor. he knows a little bit but i was wondering if anyone had any tips or suggestions to help me out. any help is much appreciated, thanks
Re: Rebuilding an engine. Any suggestions?
ok well first u could go searchin for diagrams or w/e so u kno basic layout of wuts comin out, make sure u have all the right tools dont wanna start pullin the motor to find out u gtg out to buy like a piston ring compressor, LABEL or TAKE PIX of EVERYTHING all the lil screws and bolts and stuff so u dont end up putting ur motor back together and u see u got a pile of hardware left over and u dont kno where the hell it goes, take it apart..clean everything thoroughly, inspect all parts for wear, chips, cracks, etc buy any new things u might need, now would b a good chance to upgrade anything u have in there if ud like, and have fun? lol its gonna b a great learning experience i remmeber whn i took apart my first motor in school i was kinda lost cuz it was an american motor lol! but after the first time doing it slow n takin notes remembering how stuff went and the basic idea i could strip down and clean n put it all back together in like under an hour well done so take your time and good luck!

yeah i plan on getting a manual and some diagrams so i know how everything comes off and goes back on. im also gonna try to upgrade all the small things that i can that'll be easier wehile the motor is out. and ive learned from experience to label **** and not lose little screw and bolts. been there before.

yea deff like dont go over board thinkin oh now its apart i should get better pisons and a new crank performance cams etc...thats farther down the line if u plan on goin crazy with it....I/H/E is usually best to start off with n give a motor as long as u get the breathing done u get alot more space and availability for bigger things

Re: Rebuilding an engine. Any suggestions?
building a motor is all about clearances. if the bores need boring or even excessive honing, ull have to get new pistons and rings. if there isnt a ridge on the top of the deck outside the cylinders, you may get away with a slight hone and keep the original pistons. youll want to get new rings. have the head and block checked and milled to make sure the deck is flat. thats usually pretty cheap. i pressure check and mill heads for around $60 and its well worth it. you can also have new seats, guides, seals, and have the valves done for extra insurance. you dont want to put it together and it smoke or have low compression on 1 cylinder. if you dont know a lot you can get a machine shop to check and assemble the bottom end to make sure all bearing clearances are in spec. too lose or too tight and ull be pullin it back out. if you plan to abuse the motor doing it right the first time will be worth the effort and money. make friends with a good machine shop that is fluent in honda engines and ull be fine. they have the tools and experience to make sure its done right.

man just make sure you label everything good and hone the cylinders, change the rings and gaskets, timing belt, water pump, etc I just did my 93 a week ago and it started first try. using haynes manual
Re: Rebuilding an engine. Any suggestions?
i got the haynes manual but havent really used it. probably gonna need it alot more when putting everything back together. but we got most of it done. we got the headers, head, intake manifold and everything off. just have to figure out how to get the block out without a lift

i was goingw to do that but i bought a motorcycle lift to lift the engine and were going to lift it and take off all the motor mounts, then drop the motor, life the car a little bit, and pull the motor out. a little unconventional but lets hope it works
