Oil in Air Filter Area
Oil in Air Filter Area
2002 honda civic lx.........My car dies when in idle but once it gets going it runs fine. I took off Air filter and noticed oil going down the motor from the top. What could possible be the problem? It also is burning/wasting tons of oil. Any help?? Please???
I have changed spark plugs and put new air filter. No luck.

Re: Oil in Air Filter Area
its natural. if your refering to the hose that connects from the top of the valve cover to the intake box then thats normal. any other place than that, oil anywhere else is not normal. its just a random thing with engines. some engines have blowby and some engines dont. blow by is what causes the oil to reach the top of the valve cover and into the intake, where it burns off.
your idling problem is a different issue. how many miles are on the car? maybe its time for a valve adjustment.

Re: Oil in Air Filter Area
If it idles like *** and runs fine, the Idle air control valve is clogged. Take off the throttle, spray throttle body cleaner in the throttle... the rectangular slot in the side of the bore is the valve passageway. Clean it out.
You can thank the EPA for the gunk.
The burning oil needs more diagnostics. Do a compression and leakdown test and see if the motor is still all sealed up. If its oil (blue smoke) it wouldnt be the head gasket. If its burning white, then look into the headgasket, as white smoke is coolant.

In order to get the codes you need a scanner. If you take it to auto zone or somewhere like that they can generally check them for you. If you don't have a check engine light on though, you shouldn't have any codes to read.
