is this okay??
is this okay??
I was just wasting time in my engine bay tonight when I noticed this, just behind the air filter (is that the throttle body, maybe?)
notice that hole, and also you can see it's cracked on the side. this is past the air filter, but before the the cylinders, so it seems to me that dust and **** could get into my engine through there...should I be concerned?

Re: is this okay??
this might be a dumb idea, I'm kind of ashamed of even having thought of this, but would it be alright to just duct tape it temporarily until I can get some money for an intake?

Re: is this okay??
No no. duct tape = melted mess. The glue on the tape will melt and get all gooey. You'll wish you hadn't.
Re: is this okay??
yeahh that's kinda what I was thinking. I guess I'll just have to tough it out and hope nothing gets in there for a little while...
are all civic cold air intakes basically the same? by which I mean, is it worth it to spend extra money on a brand name. I'm asking because with my Mustang, I just put on a 40 dollar eBay CAI cus they're essentially all the same. I don't know if it's different for Civics?

Wow. Asking which intake opens a whole other bag of worms. Some people have reported pretty good luck with ebay stuff, but others not so much.
You never know what you're going to get on ebay. If you'll have all of the parts, etc. However, it's cheap.
If you go with name brand you are getting r&d. The companies have installed them on the car and can verify that they fit and work properly. When you buy name brand you're more likely to get everything you need for a successful intake mod.
I have a Weapon R Secret Weapon intake sitting here in the box ready to roll as soon as I get some filter oil. Several people have reported a nice quieter sound and slight gains from this particular intake. It seems to be at least one of the front runners, although certainly more expensive than ebay.
Others are big AEM and Injen fans.

Re: is this okay??
If you get CAI dont get the AEM one..either Injen or Fujita..Dont get an ebay one either..All there filters sit in front of the fans which you know is right in front of the engine..Thats how the AEM sits..The Injen and Fujita sit all the way down in the bumper away from everything
Re: is this okay??
okay, cool.
i found a used Fujita CAI for 100 on eBay. yeah it's from eBay but it's Fujita, it looks brand new, I don't see why a used Fujita CAI would be bad other than possibly having to change the filter, right?

Re: is this okay??
correct you are. The filter is the important part. The intake is going to make little to no gains, mostly you'll just notice the difference in sound. Once you get in the power band they start to get pretty loud.
Re: is this okay??
Make sure you keep in mind when you're deciding on intakes that time-tested issue of Hydrolocking.
And if finances are an issue, I'm sure you could get a used OEM intake from a user that replaced theirs with an aftermarket intake for next to nothing.

Re: is this okay??
Even with a cold air intake, I've never considered hydrolocking to be a concern. should it be?
I'm not sure just how low the filter is for a Civic CAI but I'm thinking i'd have to drive through at least a foot of water for this to happen. now why would I do that?
I didn't think rain would be enough to be an issue either. I have a fender-well CAI in my old car and that's always been fine.

Re: is this okay??
It hasn't happened to me, personally, but it makes sense when you think about it. For some intakes, the filter is below the headlight. That's pretty low. Keep in mind the filter doesn't have to be submerged to suck in water, it can be a combination of things. If your cheap little splash-guard is gone or you're at full or even 3/4 throttle, you're going to suck up water.
Not to say it's a certainty, just a risk to be aware of. 9 times out of 10 if you put in the clutch when you go through a puddle to kill the vacuum you should be fine.
