DIY sidemarker LED retrofit, part 2
okay i basically have them done, here are the pics, i just have to cover the rear board with electrical tape liquid and seal the front and back gaps with silicone. should be ready in 24 hrs lol. but i am super happy. my last setup was 2 amber superflux (piranha) which was not bright enough for me. so i went with lumiled this time (the wide angle version) and did 8 leds per marker. 4 in series wired to 13.5v input. should be fine just for blinking. i guess i could have done it so one row stays on and the other blinks but i wanted full bright lol. and they are very nice at 12.8v already. should be killer when the car is on.

very nice
where do you get blank circuit boards like that from? I could use a few of those for some projects of mine

just to make sure I have this straight, this time around you used lumiled superflux leds instead of piranah superflux leds. the only thing different about the leds you used are the brand? superflux is the name of the design/style led

yes. okay here is the old retro if you remember. not nearly bright enough (even tho it was brighter than 194 amber bulb).

Re: DIY sidemarker LED retrofit, part 2
got mine from led-car.com but they are cheaper elsewhere. i installed them, they are taped to the panel and silicone in the back waiting to cure but its really cold outside so maybe by tomorrow. i hope i squirted the silicone where it should go lol. it was hard to see back there. they still dont seem that bright
but maybe with the car on and them getting a bit more power, it will be better. you prolly should go with the small 40 degree angle ones cause they are much more intense.

Re: DIY sidemarker LED retrofit, part 2
cool yeah, cause leds have a tendency to wash out during the day, esp since they are mounted so far back in the marker.

it just oem lumileds i used. but here are some useful led links.
www.led-car.com
www.ledsupply.com
www.theledlight.com
www.superbrightleds.com
sidemarkers came from dealer $12 each, and everything else like the board and wire and soldering stuff from radioshack.

Re: DIY sidemarker LED retrofit, part 2
well its one of those huge load resistors superbrightleds.com sells but they get very hot. a better way is switch to an electronic flasher instead of thermal.

Re: DIY sidemarker LED retrofit, part 2
i made these as signal only and spliced into turn signal wires green and black. i thought about doing one row for parking light and another row for signal, but i really just wanted a bright signal light. i dont see myself making anymore due to the amount of work and problem. i still dont know if the second one is sealed properly yet. its a full day job and alot of trial and error.
Re: DIY sidemarker LED retrofit, part 2
Yeah those are nice man, i wish i had the time and money to continue working on my car. i havent even washed it in like 4 months (winter). Nice side markers man!

Re: DIY sidemarker LED retrofit, part 2
ugh yeah me neither, i cant even clean off the glue and foam from the last wheel weights cause the goo gone just freezes lol. its only gonna be 5 degrees today lmao
Re: DIY sidemarker LED retrofit, part 2
oh damn, lol, my winter is a high of 67 and partly cloudy. SF bay area winter. doesnt really help me blaming weather for not washing my car but it might rain in the next few weeks. hahaha

Re: DIY sidemarker LED retrofit, part 2
okay...updating with hopefully the last installment, V3, which i had to redo yet again cause the old ones leaked. this time i used epoxy to seal them once they were on the car. i dont think they will ever leak or fall out anymore lol. this time i used plastic weld to seal the board, cause liquid electrical tape sucks. and now they are dual function.

8 superflux leds, totally clear when off

bottom row of 4 leds comes on with park lights (very bright at night). top row of 4 leds comes on with turn signal.
