Question scratch removal

My car was scratched near driver's side rear tire. I was looking for some DIY scratch removal stuff.

Here is the scratch looks like

http://picasaweb.google.com/binarysemaphore/CarScratch

I googled for it and found http://www.paintscratch.com. Is it any good ? It says that I need to apply primer, then basecoat, then clearcoat and then some kind of compound. Is this the correct method for these kinds of scratches ?

Also, is touch up paint from Honda only a basecoat or is it mixture of basecoat+clearcoat ?

Any advice is really helpful !

Re: scratch removal

that is a little more than a minor fix. to make it look nice the area is going to have to be sanded, primered, painted, then clearcoated for best results. I am pretty sure (99%) the touch up paint is base coat only. If you want to dab some on there it wont look professional by any means but it would get rid of the dark part where the paint is completely scratched off.

Oh and dont buy the spray can and assume you can just spray it on...you will be making a huge mistake.

Re: scratch removal

Thanks for your reply snipercout.

So I guess I will have to order paint kit from paintscratch.com and follow the procedure of sanding, applying primer, basecoat and then clear coat.

Is it do-able by a newbie DIYer ? Any reviews about paintscratch.com ? Which one is better paint pen or brushes ?

Re: scratch removal

well forsure you wont get the finish like how it was before, but if you just want to take the plastic colour/black out, then go ahead with the touch up paint. If not, I'd consider a body shop to repaint and blend the whole thing.

Re: scratch removal

yea, blending is very hard, cuz u gotta take into account fade and dirt and whatnot, touch up is a blend of clear and color so that u get that gloss look, i just had to do it myself, if u wetsand the touchup and then buff it, itll blend pretty well, but it will take a few layers to get the paint layers the same

Re: scratch removal

have you ever done any painting on cars? if not.. take it slow. I would do some additional research on the internet on this subject. I know there are several other threads on these forums that have to do with painting. I think the shaving of the front license plate holder DIY talks about painting.
Have you tried getting an estimate to have this fixed professionally? Something this small might not set you back very much. It may be worth it if you are inexperienced. I am all about DIY though...so if you are confident..have at it, learn a little. Research is your best friend

Re: scratch removal

precisely, but it is rather hard to explain painting over the internet... either do it or dont, u screw up, u pay for it, u dont do it, u pay for it, so either way, just try it after some research

So did you use genuine touch up paint from Honda ? Were your scratches as severe as mine ? Didn't you require a primer ?

Re: scratch removal

If you sand the entire area like you are going to have to do, to do it right, you will need primer. For tiny rock chips and such you dont need primer

Re: scratch removal

honestly man, if you've never done any kind of body work, i'd just take it somewhere. body work for the first time on a car this new might be a bad idea. it's a very patient job. i've had my dad try to teach me a few things and we did some serious body work on an old car i had, and it is time consuming. if you do decide to go ahead and tackle it though, research first, and don't rush.

Re: scratch removal

its easy, just get some 2000 grit sand paper, and a spray bottle with water on it, oh and a buffer, and some rubbing compound, and some polishing compound, and some buffer pads, and some help, and some advice, and start somewhere it wont be noticed if u screw up, just get some touch up paint anywhere, any parts store carries it, but for some colors u have to have it made up for you, like i did, since i dont have a popular color, now silver should be easy to find, even in small spray cans, but with that ull need clear coat, and tape, and newspaper, and well, on second thought, just pay to have it fixed, a lot of people can come to ur house and do it for not that much, especially with metallic

Re: scratch removal

lol. just be careful AND TAKE YOUR TIME!! I have ruined a perfectly good front lip trying to paint it myself. I took all the precautions and did everything properly, but rushed right at the end. Made me upset that sanding one area of slightly un-dried clearcoat caused the paint to roll, making me destroy the whole thing....

I ended up just bringing and new one to a body shop..

bottom line.... rice4lyfe hates paint, and take your time

Re: scratch removal

Thats a scuff and a half. If you were to buff that area, you will steal see the black on the bumper. Best bet is to get it done by a pro, unless you dont mind a DIY with touch up, which will be noticeable to someone with a good eye.
