Rep Power: 0 Adding a sixth gear?
I am probably going to have to have my transmission rebuilt. I remeber reading an article in Honda Tuning a while back that SI and RSX people can add the sixth gear from the TYPE S (Of course there is more to it than just the gear). Was wondering if there was anyway to do it with the transmission on the D17 series. I would guess if there was a D17 series with a sixth speed it would be possible. I would not think you could use the gears from the TYPE S and put them on the shaft of the D17s and am guessing you could not just swap out internals all together. Just a thought/question. Call me dumb if you wish.

oh wow harsh...its not stupid though...thats actually a cool idea..ADDING ON A GEAR whats stupid is adding on a gear to the d17 tranny or any civic tranny for that matter. the cost/custom work/time/patience to benefit ratio once again... is at a huge disadvantage.

That would be phat if you could just like pour a bottle of "Nu-Gear" in your gas tank and it would build a new gear in your transmission.
This would only work if there was such thing as a six speed EX, which there isn't so no..... I maybe you could mate it to a GSR six speed or something like that who knows what'll fit....

Ooo ooo!! Eyger!! PM me with a shipped price o f your Nu-Gear! I'm on it like vomit!
Naw, good idea, but unfortunately wishful thinking. Redline at 129 mph in 5th gear is kind of crappy.

Thanks for all the replies. I figured since there was no 6 speed EX it would not be possible. I had not thought about the case issue. I do not know much about building/rebuilding transmission but asking questions is how you learn.

i think if ur going to add a 6th gear, ur gonna have to change up all the ratios of the previous gears to work out right. waste of time imo. but cool thought of having a 6spd single cam?

the one thing u'll have to remeber is that a new linkage would be needed... i have no idea if there's a swap... but i woould think you could fabricate one from the k20 tranny thats a six speed because it seems to have the same linkage...
so.. i would think you would need...
a k20 type s tranny linkage
find out the gearing on a the d17 tranny
rework gearing
new bearings
custom input and output shaft
i would recommend a new clutch
maybe a different differential
now.. i no this is all jus hypothetical... but if u needed any info on tearing out the tranny.. i have done it twice andopened the tranny.. i am also currently workin on a diy

Not stupid at all. Obviously none of us who have posted so far have tried it, or even gone down the road of seriously seeing if its even possible. I would love a 6-spd D17, but don't have the technical know-how to try things out to see if they would work with some fabrication or not.

it's not stupid in theory, if you're trying for better fuel economy (4k rpm @ 80mph sucks) or reaching for high numbers (250-275+hp). it would be stupid on cost-to-benefit though since you could get a k20 with 6 speed and more hp for less money.

WOW!!
You can't put a 6 speed on a D17.
You can't get 200 HP out of a NA D17.
You can't put a super charger on a D17.
You can't out run a meter maid with a D17.
Intake does nothing for the D17.
A Header does nothing for the D17.
You can't put an exhaust on a D17 with out a turbo and make it sound good.
What is with all the negetivity?
The reason Honda put the D17 in the ULEV Civic is because it is a ULE motor that gets 30+ MPG.
If you want all the things stated above do a swap or get a diff car.

Here we go again!
Here is where the 200 HP on a NA D17 conversation is, if you would like to chime in.
