Newbie wanting service help
Hi guys,
My wife has a 2004 Honda Civic with approx 12,000 miles on the clock. It needs a service and I've decided to do it myself.
Its a 1.6 Vtec, does the ECU have to be reset or anything, as I've only every worked with mk2 VW Golfs.
Can anyone give me any tips or hints?
Thanks in advance.

there really isnt a service at 12k. basically what it is..is an oil change and tire rotation. check ur air filter while your at it. but thats basically it. No the ecu doesnt need to be reset. do you have the MAINT REQD light on??? theres a process to turn the off,
Hi there, thanks for your reply,
Yeah I dont think there is one at 12k, but its been 3 years and requires a yearly service.
I was going to do the oil, oil filter, air filter, spark plugs and brakes (as there seems to be a scrapping noise when braking).
The MAINT REQD light is not on, not sure if it even has one, but can you please tell me the process to turn it off?
Also is there anything special to do to change the front brakes?

hey, at 12k u dont have to do spark plugs. its not called for til either 60k or 120k. i usually do them at 60k. as for the brakes, u must not drive this alot? 12k? lol. i got an 05 i got 50k. lmao. i do alot of driving. listen, i dont think you need brakes. that seems kinda early. but u never know. take your wheels off...look at the pads. see how thick they are. from there you can determine if you need them or not. for the rear remove the drum..look at the shoe. samething..look at the thickness.
as for the light..check this thread out. GEARBOX explains how to turn it off...its easy. https://www.civicforums.com/forums/3...red-light.html

here the DIY made back in 02 by GREY. https://www.civicforums.com/forums/7...d-install.html
He pretty much explains it all. i dont know if he added..the c-clamp. your gonna need to push the piston back to be able to put in the new pads if you need them

Hey,
Thanks for the post on how to turn off the maintenance light, looks so easy.
Yes i know its only done 12k miles (not kilometres!), it doesnt really get driven much.
I usually do a oil, oil filter, air filter, spark plugs service every year on my golf, but as my wifes car is new, I havent touched it.
Honda are charging £300 for a service and brakes, which I think is extoriant (sp?)

There is an updated brake pad install by Grey. I don't know what was updated, but just FYI.

As has been said, all you need at 12k is oil, and maybe an air filter. You may also wanna check your cabin air filters. It's a simple process. Just open the glove box, pull out the clip on each side, so it drops down, and then remove the little door on the box behind the glove box. Pull out the filter on the left, then slide the one from the right over and pull that out too. If there's a bunch of crap stuck in them, replace them. They should be available at most auto stores. Stay away from the stealership on that one, tho, they'll rape you with their prices. As far as the brakes, nothing should be worn out at 12k. If they're making noise, take a look at them, and maybe try taking it to a different stealership and see if whatever is causing the noise is still under warranty. Could be as simple as the squealer thing to let you know when your pads are low being bent too much and engaging too early in the pad life.
