lowering = airbags deployment

found on page 170 on the 2002 civic manual
" do not make any modifications that would change your ride height of your car, or install wheels and tires with a different overall diameter. such modifications can adversley affect handling, and intefere with the operation of the car's anti-lock brakes and other systems. in addition, any modifications that decrease ground clearence increases the chance of undercarriage parts striking a curb, speed bump, or other raised object, which could cause your airbags to deploy"

i heard of parts damaged under the car from lowering and colliding at a high rate of speed, but come on airbag deployment maybe if you hit a speed bump with a lowered car at like 80. correct me if i'm wrong

I have never heard of this happening to anyone, nor have I ever experienced it myself. I'm lowered almost 2" in the front and back, and have hit some pretty hard bumps in the road at high speeds, have gone off curbs, and have even gotten my car stuck on an apex incline (resulting in a long scratch on the B-pipe running from the cat to the muffler). But I have never had a problem with airbags deploying.

I believe the manual is very right. My bro hit a pothole in his GS-R while his suspension was modded with 17s, and springs that made the car VERY low. When he hit the pothole (his front right tire hit it), his tire busted, his rim was bent and his shocks blew... the pothole caused the passenger-side airbag to deploy... he was on his way to school and it was raining... almost lost control of his car and had to change his tire on the side of the freeway after driving from a bridge to pay the toll with his busted tire. So yeah, the airbag CAN potentially deploy from the sensors near the front tires. I guess it depends on the situation... a busted 17 inch tire would make a lot of friction so it sounds likely.

sorry to hear about your bro's ride i can see why you might hesistate on lowering, i'm still wanna do neuspeed race but gonna stay w/15's for normal driving (too many jackers around my area and 18's aren't exactly good for a daily driver at that height). how fast did he the pothole? I'd say he was going around 40 and hit it. Well, I'm not hesitating about lowering my car... I just had to point out that the airbag can deploy... if this happens on the driver's side, that could mean a BIG problem, and possibly a wreck because the driver's side airbag would possibly knock your arms away from the steering wheel... they deflate immediately, though. Still, very dangerous.

I am going with 16s. 16s won't get damaged by potholes. I'll get 17s later. I'm glad my bro didn't wreck his GS-R (or he'd have two unfortunate Integras wrecked). He ended up putting 14s on the front... he can barely go over a speed bump in them, though... because the header is less than one inch from the ground... and on top of that, his car is illegally low. (His headlights aren't 20 inches off the ground because of the springs.)

I don't remember where I read this, but isn't the safest drop for our cars like 1 1/2 inches? I'm thinking anything lower than that would be a rough enough ride to induce kidney dialysis, not to mention perhaps farfetched idea that the airbags might be deploy? I'm still going with 17s, I'm turning 25 shortly, which means insurance goes down. So in the event of airbags or whatever, my *** is with Progessive insurance, bring it on.

Id say 2" with our cars is about the limit, any lower than that and struts and shocks start going out, dont' go cheap on the suspension parts and it will ride fine, take mine for example

i agree with RunawaySoul about not lowering your car more than 1 1/2 inchs with 17 inch wheels. my car is currenty lowerd about 2 inchs all around with ground control coilovers and the ride is real bad. any bump in the road will make your car jolt real bad.

Does anyone know how lowering your car affects the car in a collision? That's the main thing that is keeping me from lowering my car...I used to drive a truck before, so I am used to sitting up higher than everyone else in traffic. The first time I drove my civic at night, I thought I was gonna get run over by EVERYONE. I guess I'm just not a big fan of seeing so many headlights at eye level...

well this happend to me ( i was a n00b driver at the time ) i dropped my 1990 civic with eibach pro-kit springs and rear ended an altima. i must have tweaked her suspension but that was it because i went right under her car. damaged my hood and front fender but my bumper was unscathed. by lowering you negate the front bmpr in a head on collision. but that's an eazy fix don't hit anyone

Yeah but the sensors are gonna act differently with modified suspension.
