Throttle Problems

Hey
in my 1998 civic there is a slight problem with the throttle, right at the start of its travel it feels like it catches on something & i have narrowed it down.. the problem occurs where the throttle cable enters the engine, that part with the spring on it. It seems that the catch or problem is happening within the engine part where it is not visable. And the catch or problem only occurs whilst the engine is running does anyone have any ideas on what may be the problem.. Cheers

Sounds like there is slack in the throttle cable and it needs to be replaced due to streching or it just needs to be adjusted.

Here is an online honda service manuall that will help you research the issue further.

I have the same exact issue with my 1998 civic lx. I have had it for 6 months now and the accelerator pedal tends to "stick" at the top of its travel point. It only happens when the car is running, never when it is turned off and you try to depress the pedal. It usually never occurs in the first 5-10 minutes of driving but begins after the car warms up. It is especially bad when I stop at a light, take my foot off of the pedal, and then try to depress it when I begin accelerating. I have to push relatively hard with my foot against the "stickiness" and then the pedal quickly depresses through it and makes the car rev way more than I would like. Once I get past the top point of pedal travel the pedal works fine until the next stop I come to. I tried to replicate this same issue the moment I turn the car off, and then the pedal moves cleanly. I lubricated the cable and housing as well as where the cable wraps around the throttle mechanism, but no luck. I did see a recall on 1997 civics about the same exact thing, but they did not say specifically what parts have gone bad or why it happens. Any ideas? Cost of repair?

Follow your throttle cable and see if it is binding up anywhere

I'd check if the butterfly in the throttle body is gummed up and sticky. Take off the air intake and spray in some carb and choke cleaner. Turn the throttle rotor by hand and wipe the edges of the butterfly and get that gunk off.

I have a sneaking suspicion that it may be the butterfly valve that is sticking in the throttle body, since I have inspected the cable and lubricated everything as much as possible. Whether the valve is gummed up, worn out, or damaged is yet to be seen. The fact that the issue can't be replicated when the car is off could be due to heat expansion and contraction of the overall engine and butterfly valve. I will have to take a look this weekend and see what I find. If anyone has had this problem before and found the cause, just let me know.

That was the problem with my civic it was the butterfly valve. All i did was get to the butterfly valve spray valve cleaner around the edges toroughly and wiped off with a damp cloth and now it works great. Hope it is as easy for you and there a no major problems..
