MORE break-in questions... Need specific info.
Okay, I've been driving my car for a bit now. It's at around 300km now. The manual says it should be broken in at 1000km but it's not clear what is fast acceleration. I accelerate a little faster than most cars so I change gears pretty fast but I don't think I go over 4000rpm. I'm not accelerating like I'm racing though. I'm only at RPMs around 4000-5000 when I'm in the lower gears accelerating. I don't think I've even gotten to 4000 in 5th.
I've read a bit in the forums. I'm still confused on whether it there should be variation or more constant speeds in my driving. Seems to be a bit of a debate there. Anyway, I'm just doing whatever driving I would normally do. Hopefully that's good enough.

I drove mine like a grandma out for a Sunday drive for the first 600 miles. I never took the rpms about 3500 and never accelerated quickly in the least. Even after the 600 miles, I gradually increased the rpms little by little to finally I started giving her heck. I think that if it needed be driven at differing speeds the manual would have specified this. I currently have 1500 miles and I got her up to 115 on the interstate yesterday and when I arrived at my house, there was very distinct burning smell coming from the engine bay. I don't know if this means the engine isn't fullly broken in or what.

Basically you want to vary your engine rpm's and not accelerate too fast either. Do this and your engine will love you. At first I kept mine below 3,000. I accelerated really slowly too. Then I moved that number up to 4,000, and so on... I tried to vary engine rpm as well. Easier with a manual transmition. I would just shift up or down randomly. I think this helped a lot. When my engine revs it emits a high pitched wine. My sister has a 2001 LX as well and her engine sounds more throaty and I even think it accelerates a little poorer than mine does. Maybe this is just because of differences in manufacturing though?

It might be the clutch. I did that once when trying to do a peel out. Then again, maybe you're referring to the oil that's on the exhuast system? That stuff burns off when the car is new.

Nah, I was hauling down the highway, not much clutch use. I have 1600 miles, do you think stuff could still be burning off. I am afraid that my cai and exhaust are causing my engine to run lean and that is where the burning smell is coming from.

At 1,600 miles that oil should be long gone. Hum... Wat kind of smell is it? Like exhuast? Maybe your exhaust system sprung a leak and it's getting into the cabin?

It almost kinda of smells like oil burning. Like if you get your oil changed and they get some on the header or something. It doesn't have quite that potent of a stinch though. Hmm...next time I will have to pop the hood and try to see, well sniff, exactly where the smell is coming from. Oh, I only smell it if I have been redlining it or shifting just before redline. IE..getting on the freeway and accelerating through the top of each gear.

thats the clutch burning. i had to do some heavy driving through the adirondack mts and through the trip i could smell the clutch burning. it might have just been heat sink but now my clutch doesnt seem to be smooth as it first was, and i only have 3700 miles on it. well, thats why we have a warranty.

How could it be the clutch. I'm not burning it or anything. My foot is completely off the gas when I push the clutch in and release it. I am just talking about flying down the interstate, not tearing up a curvy road or anything. It doesn't seem to smell like the clutch.
My car was driven 100 miles away to get to me. It was on I4 for over an hour, and when the guy dropped it off, he was like, that thing is pretty peppy for a Honda. Accelerates nice, and chirps the tires in second too! Man, I had already signed, so I was screwed. I ripped that **** a hole tho, and resisted the urge to beath the sh*t out of him. Oh well, if something goes wrong Ill build the engine up. *****.

<< How many miles do you have on it? When was your last oil change? Did you DIY? >>
I have 1600 miles and the car is a month old. I haven't changed the oil and hadn't planned on it till 5000miles. I put an ingen cai and magnaflow exhaust on but no other mods as of yet. I think next time it happens, I just run it to the dealer and let a tech have a sniff.

Oh wait, how recently did you put that Magnaflow on? I bet you that's it. it still has the oil on it and that's getting burned off.
PerfectD3: Aw man! That sucks. I would have said, "Who the hell told you that you could redline my baby?".

No, the exhaust got broken in a few weeks ago now. Fudge, I don't know what it is. I went to wal-mart last night which I have to hop on the interstate for. I went about 8miles at 70 mph and smelt it again and so did my wife. The only conclusion I can draw is that the engine is still breaking in and may be burning a little more oil than normal. Appreciate all the help.
