Question Managing oil filter in oil changes...

How do people manage the oil that leaks out when you unscrew the oil filter? I have an '02 LX and last time (the first time) I tried to change the filter I got oil everywhere.

I'm thinking about something like a cutout milk jug or something.

Suggestions?

Do it quickly, and have a can of brake cleaner ready.

Would slowly unscrew till it starts to drain. Have a pan ready underneath to collect the oil, it should miss most stuff like exhaust and such. Then just slowly unscrew it , take it of carefully, shouldnt cause a huge mess if you have patience and are careful!!

I just got an 04 LX recently and it's time to change the oil. Is the filter easy to reach from up above or does the car need to be jacked up to acces it?

Loosen the filter and squeeze in a rag underneath it to soak up all the oil that would otherwise flow down your arms and all over the car.

^^^what he said.

or you could try putting a grocery bag over the filter before you unscrew it. not sure if that would work, though. sideways oil filter =

I find if I drain out all the oil first,

drop the car level wit the ground,

then unscrew the filter

there really isnt much oil left in the filter to spill...

hope this helps...

Even at stock height I can't slide under the car.
Most of us are lowered too

The real problem isn't really the oil that spills out from the filter, but that there is no straight downward path for the oil to spill to.
Oil runs down all over every part near the filter.

Do a search. What I do is get a cereal box(thicker paper) and shape it so that I can get it under the filter and makes a path to the drain pan.

If you get no oil dripping from the filter, its probably being changed cold.
