Taking out Header Studs...

Hello,

I tried searching, but couldn't come up with anything (at least not on these forums). I googled it and it seems that Integra header studs can be unscrewed. We have two bolts up top and three header studs on the bottom to secure our header onto the head. Anyway, has anyone tried removing the lower three header studs? Does anyone know if they come out? I tried, but it doesn't seem to budge. Some guys say you have to weld on a nut and then you can remove them.

Anyway, are our removable? I bought stainless steel studs that I want to use. I already have them screwed in where the bolts used to be, but I want to have all of them like that.

Thanks in advance for any info...

i used vise grips. it destroys the threads, but youre replacing them, so it wont matter.

as with listed above, you can use vise grips or pliers.

you can also use a stud wrench to remove and install studs, not sure where you can get one though.

But the way I see alot is take 2 nuts and jam them together on the stud, Make sure both are tight together. then use a wrench on the lower nut to remove the stud. to install it, use a wrench on the top nut.

yea like the guy stated above is the way i heard it. To make it a little clearer, screw two nuts onto the stud. Then tighten them both together by tightening the bolts like this nut-><-nut. This causes them to lock together. Remember to line the nuts up so that you can use a wrench to loosen it. Good luck and tell me how it goes, I broke a stud and still havent replaced it.

I agree with jamming 2 nuts... seems to work pretty well. Probably will also want to PB blast the interface just to be sure it loosens up. Don't use a rediculously large socket handle either... you won't want to put a lot of sideways torque on it and have it snap.

Yeah, everyone has a snap-on dealer. hehe... Seriously though, what is a snap-on dealer? Sounds like you're a mechanic.

Snap-on is a tool manufacturer. Actually one of the more pricey but better tool manufacturers.... If Craftsman are God's gift to home repair consider Snap-On to be God's gift to the automotive world.

ian01ex is an unknown quantity at this point
I got mine off with a socket wrench. The only problem I ran into was getting the bolts to come off on the bottom of the header where it meets up with the downpipe/cat pipe whatever you wanna call it. Had to use a breaker bar and a nice long extension to get some leverage. Besides that the only one that was a little bit of a problem was the far right bolt since the alternator is in the way. All you have to do is undo it a little at a time since you dont have much room to work with.
