MPG Tuning question

This is a long shot, but does anyone know of any ways to increase gas mileage? Im referring to engine, and i'm not willing to strip car weight. Would better pulleys help gas mileage?

the easiest way is just to drive carefully...not entirely granny shifting on a manual ... take it easy on the gas

I believe advancing your timing would help....... and give you power at the same time but you have to run on higher octane gas....so you'll have better milage but you'll be paying more so theres no point

Your MPG are directly affected by such things as:

* Vehicle condition / State of tune
* Modifications
* Driving Style

The biggest control you have is your driving technique. Let's cut down to the facts. If you constantly hammer the throttle and keep the revs high, you WILL consume more fuel, no doubt. Try using your Honda manual's recommended shift points for those times when you're not in need of speed. Now I'm not saying to drive like a granny all the time, just be more conscious of HOW you drive.

Recommended:

Page 179 (2002 manual)

1st - 2nd: 15 mph
2nd - 3rd: 27 mph
3rd - 4th: 33 mph
4th - 5th: 53 mph

Note the RPM associated with each speed, that will help you to make the shifts easier. These are the results I've seen so far with a totally stock 02 EX coupe running synthetic (the oil showed no increase in mpg). I'll update it once the AEM CAI and Magnaflow are installed, along with dyno results. Keep in mind, these figures are 100% stop-and-go driving with no highway miles yet.

You are going to the dyno after installing the CAI and exhaust? Awesome! That's the same setup as me but with the injen cai. Can't wait to see the results. Also, what does it cost to dyno your car?

MBow,

We've got a few different dyno tuners here in Phoenix. Last time I checked it was between $45-60 for 3 dyno pulls or runs. It might be a while before I do it, but I will post the results when I do. I'm tired of BS horsepower claims from companies that try to suck in all the young kids driving Imports & Mustangs etc. It's time to see some real world results and find out if we're getting our money's worth

Cool! That's not too bad to get some actual numbers for your car. Are you going to do a run stock and then a run with the mods? It doesn't matter if it takes ya a while, just make sure you post the results. I am sure everyone will be interested in your findings.

The plan is to get a "Baseline" run on the stock EX coupe, then a run after each mod has been added. My prediction is:

Stock: 108 - 110 rwhp
CAI: + 3 rwhp
Magnaflow: + 5 rwhp

These are "optomistic" predictions. I wouldn't be surprised if it puts out less. This engine is great for efficiency, but it doesn't respond well to mods.

let's get back to the post subject here. I'm still looking for answers if anyone has any, besides the get rid of fat chicks and drive better comments. Recently traveled 240 miles consuming about 6 1/2 gallons of gas, so i know my driving is good. I have a automatic. For the same reason people try to squeeze out 1 or 2 more hp, i want to get more mpg. Anybody know anything worthwhile?

Grey has a spectacular aura aboutGrey has a spectacular aura about
I do!

1. Light wheels.
2. Narrow tires. (less rolling resistence)
3. Underbody moulding. (from the Civic Hybrid to lessen aerodynamic drag)
4. Ditch the spoiler. (lessens aerodynamic drag)

Basically the idea is to get rid of resistence to make your car as fuel efficient as possible. You could re-program the ECU to use less gas. You could change the gearing to use less gas. Sort of like the Civic HX is set up. Anyway, back to more practical modifications.

5. Roller tipped valve rocker arms. (less resistence)
6. Less viscous oil. (5W-20 is pretty low already though)
7. Change the camshaft to one with a less aggresive profile. (doubtful if they'll make one, but you could have the stock re-ground)
8. Upgrade the ignition system.

There are all sorts of theoretical things that one can do, but those are the major things that one can do to improve the gas mileage.
