new cam and smog

one of the great things about california is that you have to get smog done and everyone is strict with this emissions crap. anyways the other day i got a smog (failed bc the fuel cap) and i asked the guy about new cam gear and if it would affect the smog. he said i would fail smog with a new cam but i dont know how that could be? any ideas?

cam or cam gear? a mild cam wont affect anything, maybe make it leaner which would be better for smog. so long as you tune it all to ideal, it shouldn't be a problem. cam gear doesnt matter either, unless there's a specific rule that says modifying the cam timing is illegal. the cam is in the engine nobody can see it.

if you have a cam gear on it modify the original cover to fit or else you wont pass the visual inspection. A stage 1 cam might pass a stage 2 cam will not pass.
