changing gear ratios on 5-speed?

this might be a dumb question, but i did search and didnt find anything.
does anyone know if its possible to change the gear ratios on a 5-speed? i always seem run out of gears and i would think i would get better highway gas mileage if 5th gear started later so it wouldnt be revving so high at highway speeds. when im driving for good gas mileage, i shift to 5th at 35mph or so, and by 45mph im ready for a 6th gear

Woah...

Okay, I don't see why people worry about gas mileage in a 5-speed. It's not like an automatic where when you push hard, you're gonna use more gas... PLEASE KEEP THAT IN MIND!

35 MPH in 5th gear? In my EX, I'd ruin my transmission... you should just stay in 2nd (revving yes but that's me) or 3rd, (not 4th cuz I think you'll be treating it like 5th anyways). There WAS a thread about a 6th gear in a Civic but the Civic doesn't have the horsepower to support a 6th gear. That's just my take on it... so in conclusion... don't worry about revving the engine... you're not using THAT much gas just cuz you hear the engine rev... REV THAT SUCKA! We really shouldn't have to be concerned about gas mileage. Our cars get awesome gas mileage. I get 34-35mpg in the city and I hardly ever make it out of 3rd gear...

3rd gear wears out the fastest, keep that in mind...

But on the topic of gas, this is why manuals are more fuel efficient than automatics.

yea, i rarely go past 3rd gear or 60mph! thats my fav gear overall just cuz it picks up so fast and lasts enough to get some speed

Since I got my car back, I still have that habit of staying in 4th on the freeway... it's nice to max out 2nd gear goin 55MPH. Yeah, 3rd gears pick up speed while 2nd is like your speed gear... personally I'd rather be in a GS-r or somethin when I rev 2nd gear cuz I always seem to hit the speed limiter a lil' too much! (if there wasn't a speed limiter, I'd make fire come out of my exhaust, lol.)

EDIT: YES, fire comin out of your exhaust is a bad thing! ... unless you got a flame kit but you can't drive the car with those on... you will never take your car back to the dealer again!

I hit 62 in 2nd how can you shift into 5th at 35 isnt your car about to die? when im going 90 on the freeway i can contemplate another gear but you really dont need one if anything the cars should be geared so you have some pull in 4th

35mph on 5th gear...boy, the engine must be near 1500 rpm...there's no power there, nor fuel economy...because you'll need to punch the gas more to keep the engine running at such low speed for 5th gear...5th gear is fine for 50 mph or more....
