Transferring rims from one car to another and painting rims
I used to own a corolla, but that got hit, so I traded it in. I have a set of 4-lug chrome rims I placed on the corolla, and I want to use them on my new civic in the summer. According to Tirerack's online rim viewer the same rims will fit my civic. Is there anything I need to do to get them ready for the summer time. Will I need to put them on, drive to an alignment shop and get them balanced again? I am unsure on this information.
After my corolla was hit I tried to move the car, but since I park next to a curb, the car jerked into the curb. My passanger side chrome rims got scratched and cut into. I am thinking of sanding down the rough spots and painting the spots with some chrome spray paint Advanced Auto parts had. Will this work, and is this how I should go about it?

Well I was thinking of making them white. I got the pearl green color and I think White would look great on it. Do I need bolted on the car to take them and get them balanced? They were balanced when I got them from tirerack, but I was unsure if I would need to get them rebalanced, since it is a different car.

just because its 4 lug doesn't mean it will fit out civics.

I got them from dscounttire (not tire rack) last year. When viewing the application chart around december before I got my civic, the rims I have were applicable to my corolla and the civic. I don't see why it wouldn't fit if the chart says they do.
I don't know if balancing is specific for tires or if it is specific for the car. I am unsure about technical information when it comes to automobiles.
They can computer balance your tires without the tires or wheels being on your car, you can go get them
balanced then powdercoat or paint, then just put those fuggers on your car and roll....

<< Wouldn't you want to have the whole assembly balanced AFTER the powder coating job and tire mounting? >>
I don't know thats a good question. I assume there would be a difference in weight. Get the powdercoat/paint job done first and the balance or the other way around?

I posted the same question in a honda newsgroup and got the following answer
>>Anytime you add/remove the tires to/from the rims, you need to >>re-balance them. If the tires have never been off the rims, then you >>shouldn't need to re-balance, regardless of the vehicle they are going >>on. Vehicle-specific balancing is usually only done for very >>high-performance applications, such as racing.
The rims came balanced with tires, so should I still get them rebalanced? Also, anyone know a rough estimated price for a 4 wheel powdercoat job, and any place in the Baltimore, MD area that may do it? There is a fix a rim shop by me, I figured I'd give them a call later in the week to see if they do powdercoating, but if they don't I'm out of ideas. Sorry to beat this thing like a dead horse, but I like to get several answers from different people as a comparison as to what to do.

<< well since balancing is fairly cheap it's a good idea, and when painted there could be a little change. i would bet that your damaged wheel is off balance since it was hit. >>
Cool I'll get the balancing as well. The place be me paints rims, balances them, mends them, and fixes cracks (I referred a friend a couple weeks ago and he had a card from the place in his wallet). I guess I'll give them a call tomorrow. Anyone know a price range for the powdercoating though? I plan to lower the car with ground control coilovers and tokico shocks/struts(when available) Will this affect the balancing? If so I'm gonna wait.

well its gonna cost me
Balancing $10 per wheel
paint $30 for all four wheels
labor $85 per wheel
Grand Total $410
Can't wait to get my tax return, so I can pay for this and have some left to save for lowering!!!!
