Rep Power: 284 Request for Information on Changing Upper Oxygen Sensor
Request for Information on Changing Upper Oxygen Sensor
Hello Peoples,
2002 Honda Civic HX (evtec model or some junk)
Silver Coupe w/ 75k miles on it
Got a 1166 Check Engine Light a Little While Ago.
Street Glower Helped me out w/ the Honda Service Manual
*Many Thanks*
The Code is Coming from the Upper Oxygen Sensor
(The one on the Heat Shield for the exhaust manifold)
Although the Honda Service Manual does not recommend
Changing the O2 sensor, the Honda Dealership swears that is
what is wrong. So I went out on a limb and purchased the O2
sensor for about $220 off of majestichonda.com ($280 from Dealer)
I guess I'm just looking for a little advice and wisdom, before I jump
outside and crank that bad boy off.
Here is going to be my attempted steps in the removal and replacement
of the upper O2 Sensor
1)Unplug ECU fuse in fusebox
2)Unplug Upper O2 Sensor
3)Unscrew O2 sensor (carefully)
4)Screw in New one
5)Plug in new one
6)Plug in ECU
7)PRAY
I guess I did have one legitimate Question. Is there a certain tool used
for unscrewing the old sensor. I forget where I heard about it, but a from
of fitted Wrench, that has a slice cut out for the wire. It's a very tight
space under there, not much room for turning.

Rep Power: 284 You Mean an Open Ended wrench??
The o2 sensor is recessed a bit, and the ones I have now and not going to fit on to well, I don't wanna put em one uneven and twist, cause if I strip anything, it's not going to be cheap to fix it.
Normal Closed End wrench (which ussually has a nicer angled head) won't fit around the plug.

Rep Power: 0 get a propane torch and heat the manifold bung around the sensor. the metal will expand and allow the old sensor to come out easily... sears sells a special O2 sensor socket if you want it... since the old one is junk, i've always taken a pair of vice grips and pinched that sucker tight, right above the nut, and twisted it loose... heat is key here... make sure you put anti-sieze on the new sensor
