open ended or closed
don't know if this is better suited for here or techchat
if this has already been listed tell me cuz i typed in the search "open ended filters" but got nothing.
Is there a difference (except for price) between open ended cone filters or closed? or even those 'turbo' filters that look like a shroom with mesh on em?

My AEM S.R.I came with a closed end filter but I've seen ppl with the open ended ones and even those stupid plexi glass boxes covering the filter...I doubt that plexi glass disperese heat better than an actual heat guard..or hell if it even allows enough air flow
Last time I had this much fun some furniture got broken!

plexi is a bad idea. even lucite is useless a little over 100 degrees to thats dumb. as for heavy plexi, still stupid.
on a N/A 4-banger closed is fine. Open is fine. Shroom is fine. depends on actual filter construction. some filters can be almost as good as no filter at all, while others suffocate the engine

Use lexan or polycarbonate if you're going to fab a shield.
Open or closed doesn't matter, it lets in more air than the car needs anyways.

from what i've heard, open ended filters are a bad idea. Apparently they create a vaccuum that can potentially cause damage. I believe this since a guy i knew had one, and the intake sucked in the conic part of the filter.

Without the vacuum, the engine doesn't run. So the vacuum doesn't cause damage. The intake sucked in the end of the filter because it was probably a **** ricer filter that was held together with hot glue rather than something made to do the job right.
There's far too many poorly made, shitty parts that people buy vs shelling out the money to buy one of the few filters worth buying.
