Torque converter

How could you tell if a torque converter is going bad or has gone bad? Would it make a strange noise, maybe a noise almost like a clogged up pump in your car or something?

I tried searcing on google for an answer, but didnt find much. What is the problem exactly, or what does it sound like and I will look through the manaul in the tranny section under auto tranny diagnosis to see if any thing matches your problems.

torque converters are only in automatic transmissions so manual tranny's have nothing to do with them...torque converters are filled with transmission fluid (not your gearbox) and there are 2 peices to it...one attatched to the engine and the other attatched to the gears...the fluid is moved because one end of it which is connected to the engine starts spinning when the engine is on than once it spins fast enough the end coneccted to the gears spins when the pressure of the fluid that is spun into the gearbox end which moves the car...thats what u can be in drive gear and still be stopped because there is nothing physically conneting the gears to the engine other than some fluid...u can tell if its going out when u give gas and it doesnt accellerate as fast or has weak startup...or when it starts kicking really bad

who said anything about manaul trannys?

Now just cause a car doesnt accelerate so well or has weak startups doesnt constitute a bad torque converter. there are several things that can cause those problems.

possible sign of a TQ going bad is a LOW stall speed. High stall speeds are a sign of the trans slipping. I've never heard of a TQ making noises like that but im sure if it were bad enough its possible. But i would think if it got to the point where it was making noise it would prolly be severly effecting the stall speed

well the noise sounds like a whine, sorta like a clogged pump trying to get fluids. It will go away when i put it in drive reverse or any other gears. But when its sits and idels in park and neutral the noise will come back. But the other day i let my car run for a period of about 10 minutes and it went away all the time. It only seems to do it when its cold.

nobody have an idea of what the sound coming from the tranny area might be?

ya, because my steering is fine, and this is the second time its done it. First before my old tranny went out, and now right after the ebay tranny was installed, the same noise again. Just thought it might be a bad t.q.? How much does one usually cost?

i doubt its the torque converter injen...check and see if the fluid is still good and full and than check the power steering pump lines for a clog...even tho the steering would work a small clog can cause it...or it could be a misfire from the engine exhaust...often times it sounds like that...also check the brake lines and brake master cylinder

misfire from the engine? even though the sound is constant, i mean it doesnt sound like that for 1 second, its like for 3-5 minutes solid until it warms up.

most transmission places have free check ups which means they usually check tranny T.C., clutch, etc for free just charging for labor.
try that. might find it for you. but power steering does make that sound but not all the time!

oh. on the other hand is it coming from the intake? stock, and aftermarket especially, intakes have been known to make a sorta hiss kinda noise when cold.
try this... when driving fairly slow (~20-30mph) ease onto the gas very slowly. if at a certain pressure on the gas pedal you hear that hiss or same noise you are talking about then its the intake!
if you are easing on the gas slowly the hiss sounds like a VERY QUIET turbo spool noise or like a person going "sssssssssssssssssssssssss" very quietly. this is air through the throttle body right people?

so you know i have an aem sri, and this noise is MUCH louder since i got the intake. I have an auto too and thats probably it. next time you start the car after it warms up open the hood and twist the TB tab a lil to make it rev up a tiny bit you may hear that hissing i was talking about above even more then.

if you're sure that the noise is coming from your transmission...

...and it goes away when you depress the clutch pedal than it could be your throwout/release bearing.

...and the clutch doesn't affect the noise at all than you'd probably benefit from taking your tranny apart to look at your mainshaft, countershaft, diff carrier and all the other miscellaneous bearings in there.

why the noise goes away after a few mins, i don't know... it could be that it still has a little grease left in it and it's just enough to lube it once it warms up.

i know the sound isnt my intake, its definately coming from my tranny.... I just gotta take to a tranny shop or honda and let them test it. I was reading that the sound might possibly be coming from bad bearings in the tranny.

you said you got this tranny off of ebay and had someone install it for you, right? how long did you have it running before the noise started?

unless it's still covered by them, i'd definately take it to someone else.

i got the tranny off ebay from a person who purchased a d17 engine and the tranny came with the engine, so he sold me the tranny since he didnt need it... I had a local mechanic who works on cars out of his garage full time install the tranny, he said it ran and shifted perfect when he first installed the tranny... Well when i got the car i only made it about 3 miles before it slipped, then wouldnt go until it cooled off and threw a 0730 code( shift control problem) up on my dash, and now i am waiting to take it to honda to see its the clutch pressures, soleniod or what the problem might be. The mechanic that installed it doesnt offer any warranty on the product nor did the seller. If honda says the mechanic has messed something up then i am gonna get my money back for sure.
