Need Info about blown engine for 2001 civic
I was just told by my local Honda service department that my 2001 Civic needs to change all of the following parts: cylinder head assembly, head gasket,TDC Sensor, valve cover gasket, timing belt cover, cover, intake manifold gasket, rear water passage gasket, water pipe O-ring, catalytic converter. Service guy said that the camshaft has excessive end play and it would cost me about $1800 to fix that problem. Is anyone familiar with this problem? Honda only offered to pay for the catalytic converter, but left the rest on me. I've never heard of this happening. The service guy also said he's never seen this before and it was a "manufacturer's defect". I also have a '98 civic and have not had any problems with it as of yet. Any info would help. Thanks.
Well, the way I feel about it is I shouldn't have to pay for anything. I bought the extended warranty that is for 7 years. Unfortunately, I've bypassed the 80,000 mile limit. The fact that their own service personnel says that it's a manufacturing defect and they are offering to pay for the catalytic converter leads me to believe that they know they should be paying for the entire repair, but are trying to see how much they can sucker me into paying.
First of all, what did you do to your motor? Was it all stock? If it was stock than i don't think you need to pay for anything. But if it was cause for your modification than obivious honda is not going to pay for it. If your situation was your car was in stock no modification, filed a complained at honda.

well hes out of warranty, so technically its not their responsibility. But get a motor off ebay for $600 and have a shop drop it in. Shouldn't be more than $1k total.
More than what was done to the motor, what was happening before all this?
SOL on the extended warranty - that's why there are time and mileage limits. The cat they cover because of the emission warranty.
Get a second opinion, and if need be, drop a used engine in it before repairing it. Cheaper and likely to be more reliable in the long run; not all mechanics are meticulous about their work.

If you got money to spare K swap time
I'm way out in Hawaii so anything that has to be sent from the mainland, I'm sure, would cost a pretty penny. When I picked my car up yesterday from the dealership, the service rep told me that he suggested changing the TDC sensor first to see if that helps. That's about $700. Sounds like they don't even know what's wrong with it. Shot in the dark. When I drove the car home, it seemed worse than when I brought it in. The car is idleing pretty rough. Not like that before. Before I spend my own money, I'm gonna call Am. Honda to see what they have to say about it. Also, there is a local t.v. station that helps consumers.
Take it to another shop and have them check it out and see what they say...from what your telling us, sounds like your getting owned. Just like people said before, buying a new motor is cheaper. And out of curiousity, what happened to your motor?

dont walk, RUN away from that dealership. Ask around where you live and find a good reputable garage that knows Hondas pretty well. Get them to check it out for you. I don't know what your problems/symptoms are, but that dealership is trying to rape you.
